Brandon Sayles bio
Personal background
Brandon "Man of War" Sayles is an American heavyweight mixed martial artist born on April 23, 1981, in Hilo, Hawaii. His path into combat sports ran through the U.S. Army: Sayles served as a soldier and became a U.S. Army Combatives instructor, a three-time Army Combatives heavyweight champion who discovered his appetite for fighting during a deployment to Iraq in 2005. That military grappling and hand-to-hand foundation shaped the no-frills, finish-oriented style he carried into the cage. A towering 6'5" heavyweight, Sayles trained out of Fort Benning MMA in Georgia, blending the wrestling and ground control of his combatives background with heavy hands.
Path to the pros
Sayles turned professional in 2010, opening his career with a win over Arnold Adams before stopping Imani Lee with punches at XFC 15 in 2011. His ascent hit an early wall in February 2012, when he dropped a decision to Chase Gormley at XFC 16 – a competitive loss to a more experienced heavyweight that sent him back to the regional drawing board. Balancing a military career with fighting, Sayles took a multi-year break from the cage before returning in 2017.
Regional dominance and the PFL run
Sayles came back with a vengeance. Across 2017 and 2018 he reeled off a string of finishes on the Southern regional circuit – an Americana submission of Robert Neal, a referee stoppage of the experienced Adrian Henderson, and a knockout of Dexter Carthon – that rebuilt his profile and earned him heavyweight titles along the way. A scheduled 2018 bout with former NFL star Greg Hardy fell through, but the rebuild paid off with a 2021 signing by the Professional Fighters League. In his PFL debut at PFL 3 in May 2021, Sayles submitted the previously unbeaten Mohammed Usman with a second-round rear-naked choke, the biggest win of his career. The season turned the following month at PFL 6, where he ran into the powerful Russian Denis Goltsov and was stopped by ground-and-pound in the third round. A planned bout against former UFC champion Fabrício Werdum during the same campaign did not materialize.
Fighting style
Sayles is a pure finisher – all six of his professional wins have come by stoppage, giving him a 100% finish rate split between three knockouts and three submissions. The Army Combatives pedigree shows in his comfort attacking from top position and on the back, as the rear-naked choke of Usman demonstrated, while his size and power make him dangerous on the feet. The honest limitation is durability against the division's elite: both of his losses came against high-level opposition in Gormley and Goltsov, the latter exposing how a relentless wrestler with knockout power can turn the tables on a heavyweight who fights at range. Against everyone short of that tier, though, Sayles has rarely needed the judges.
Career highlights
- Submitted unbeaten Mohammed Usman — Sayles choked out the previously 7-1 Mohammed Usman in his 2021 PFL debut, the signature win of his career.
- 100% finish rate — every one of his six pro wins ended inside the distance, evenly split between knockouts and submissions.
- Three-time Army Combatives heavyweight champion — a decorated U.S. Army Combatives instructor whose military grappling background built the foundation of his MMA game.
