Regional dominance and the PFL run

Sayles came back with a vengeance. Across 2017 and 2018 he reeled off a string of finishes on the Southern regional circuit – an Americana submission of Robert Neal, a referee stoppage of the experienced Adrian Henderson, and a knockout of Dexter Carthon – that rebuilt his profile and earned him heavyweight titles along the way. A scheduled 2018 bout with former NFL star Greg Hardy fell through, but the rebuild paid off with a 2021 signing by the Professional Fighters League. In his PFL debut at PFL 3 in May 2021, Sayles submitted the previously unbeaten Mohammed Usman with a second-round rear-naked choke, the biggest win of his career. The season turned the following month at PFL 6, where he ran into the powerful Russian Denis Goltsov and was stopped by ground-and-pound in the third round. A planned bout against former UFC champion Fabrício Werdum during the same campaign did not materialize.

Fighting style

Sayles is a pure finisher – all six of his professional wins have come by stoppage, giving him a 100% finish rate split between three knockouts and three submissions. The Army Combatives pedigree shows in his comfort attacking from top position and on the back, as the rear-naked choke of Usman demonstrated, while his size and power make him dangerous on the feet. The honest limitation is durability against the division's elite: both of his losses came against high-level opposition in Gormley and Goltsov, the latter exposing how a relentless wrestler with knockout power can turn the tables on a heavyweight who fights at range. Against everyone short of that tier, though, Sayles has rarely needed the judges.
