Ian Machado Garry believes he is the fighter to finally stop Islam Makhachev's historic run. At UFC 330 on August 15, Garry will challenge Makhachev for the welterweight title, aiming to snap the champion's 16-fight win streak — the longest active streak in the UFC.
Makhachev (29-1) has not lost since a 2015 knockout to Adriano Martins. Since then, he broke the lightweight title defense record and moved up to welterweight, where he claimed gold by defeating Jack Della Maddalena. That win tied Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history.
Garry (17-1) enters the bout on a seven-fight winning streak of his own, with a 78% finish rate. The Irishman sees a clear path to victory.
Garry: 'He's never fought someone like me'
In an Instagram video, Garry acknowledged Makhachev's dominance but pointed to his own unique attributes as the key to victory.
“I don’t think Islam has a lot of weaknesses,” Garry said. “He’s never fought someone as long and tall as me. He’s not fought someone as fast as me, he’s not fought someone who has the distance management, the boxing capabilities, the head movement that I do.”
Garry also addressed Makhachev's elite grappling, welcoming the challenge. “Then also there’s the takedown defence. He might get me down, I hope he does. Because I want to prove to the world that he can’t submit me. I want to prove to the world that I can get back up. I want to prove to the world that I can beat him in his own world.”
“I don’t care how long he’s trained in that area, I don’t care if he is an internationally recognized master of sambo or not. I’m going to bounce him on his skull.”
Garry vowed to end Makhachev's streak: “I’m going to take his title. I’m going to take his throne and I’m going to finish that consecutive win streak and I’ll always be the guy that stopped history from happening.”
The fight reignites the Ireland vs. Dagestan rivalry, with Garry looking to succeed where Conor McGregor and Paul Hughes fell short.
Per Bloody Elbow, Garry's confidence is rooted in his belief that his style is Makhachev's kryptonite.
Combat Edge take
Garry's case rests on two pillars: his 6'3" frame and his takedown defense. At welterweight, Makhachev has not faced a striker with Garry's reach (77 inches) or footwork. Garry's 85% takedown defense rate in the UFC is elite, but Makhachev's 5.2 takedowns per 15 minutes is a different level of pressure.
Makhachev has submitted 12 opponents and out-grappled every welterweight he has faced. Garry has never faced a grappler of Makhachev's caliber. The Irishman's best win is a decision over Neil Magny; Makhachev has beaten five current or former champions.
The data favors Makhachev. Garry needs to prove his distance management can neutralize the champion's chain wrestling. If he can keep the fight standing for three rounds, he has a path. But Makhachev has finished 11 of his last 13 wins. History says the streak continues.
