Cameron Rowston bio
Personal background
Cameron Rowston, nicknamed "Cam Van Damme," is an Australian middleweight mixed martial artist out of Sydney, New South Wales. Fighting from the VT1 Martial Arts Academy, the 6'2" Rowston built his reputation on the Australian regional scene as a finisher who could end fights both standing and on the mat. He capped his amateur career as the No. 1 ranked middleweight in Australasia and a two-time King in the Ring tournament winner – a brutal one-night, three-fight format that helped forge the durability and finishing instinct that define his professional game. He carries a professional record of 8-2, with every one of his wins coming inside the distance.
Path to the pros
Rowston turned professional in 2016, opening his career with a first-round rear-naked choke of Reza Almasi at BRACE 45. His ascent was not linear. In just his second pro bout, at BRACE 47 in March 2017, he dropped a decision to fellow prospect Jacob Malkoun, who was making his own pro debut and would later reach the UFC. Rowston rebounded immediately, reeling off knockouts of Jye Wyllie and Dan Currie to re-establish himself among Australia's better middleweight prospects.
Building the resume
His second setback came in September 2018 at Superfight MMA 8, where unbeaten Isi Fitikefu stopped him with strikes in the first round. It would prove to be the last blemish on his record for years. From 2019 onward, Rowston went on a sustained run through the Australian circuit, alternating between New Generation Cage, Superfight MMA and the Shuriken Fight Series. He knocked out Martin Torres, submitted Leo Diaz with a first-round rear-naked choke and added a submission of Jayden Eynaud across 2019, then continued the streak with a stoppage of Eli Taufuiaevalu in 2020. He even showcased his striking in a 2022 Muay Thai bout, decisioning Connor Woodman, before returning to MMA and choking out Pane Haraki in the third round at Shuriken Fight Series 12 in September 2022. The run lifted him to 8-2 with a perfect finishing rate.
Fighting style
Rowston is one of the more complete finishers to come out of the Australian regional scene, splitting his eight wins evenly between knockouts and submissions – four apiece – for a 100 percent finish rate. That balance is the heart of his game: he is dangerous on the feet with his length and power, and equally comfortable hunting the rear-naked choke once a fight hits the canvas. His two losses both came against unbeaten or debuting opponents who later proved their quality, suggesting his setbacks were matters of timing and level rather than any glaring hole. The questions remaining are about the step up in competition, not about whether he can finish.
Career highlights
- Perfect finishing rate — all eight of his professional wins came inside the distance, split evenly between four knockouts and four submissions.
- Two-time King in the Ring winner — captured the grueling one-night, three-fight tournament twice as an amateur, finishing as Australasia's No. 1 ranked middleweight.
- Sustained winning run — rebounded from his only two losses to build a multi-year unbeaten streak across Australia's leading regional promotions.
