The Ultimate Fighter and Contender Series

That call came in 2016, when Urbina joined the cast of The Ultimate Fighter Season 23 under Team Joanna. He won his opening exhibition bout by decision over Norman Paraisy before running into Eric Spicely, who took a decision over Urbina in the next round to end his run on the show. Urbina got a second shot at the spotlight in August 2017 on Dana White's Contender Series, where unbeaten prospect Bevon Lewis stopped him with punches in the second round – the only knockout loss of his career and a fight that, as with many on that series, did not lead to a UFC deal.

Comeback and beyond

Urbina regrouped on the regional circuit and returned in form, submitting Carlos Martinez with a first-round rear-naked choke at Combate 40 in June 2019 and finishing Michael Tovar with a first-round kick at Combate 51 that December to push his professional record to 5-1. A scheduled 2024 bout with Eric McConico fell through, and he was later booked against UFC veteran Joseph Holmes at Fury FC 95, an upcoming step up in competition for the long-tenured Texan.

Fighting style

Urbina is a finisher in the truest sense: four of his five wins have come inside the distance, split evenly between two knockouts and two rear-naked-choke submissions, for an 80% finish rate. That blend reflects a fighter who can hurt opponents on the feet but is most dangerous when he closes the distance and works his wrestling and back-take game. His lone official MMA defeat, the Contender Series knockout against Bevon Lewis, came against an elite striking prospect and exposed the risk in his pressure-forward approach, but his finishing rate against regional opposition has remained a defining strength.
