James Barnes bio
Personal background
James Barnes, the bantamweight known as "Mooka," is an American mixed martial artist out of Los Angeles, California, and one of the more prolific submission artists to come through the West Coast regional scene. Standing 5'8" and competing at 135 pounds for Team Quest, Barnes has made the ground his home, building a 14-5 professional record on the back of a relentless, high-volume submission attack that has produced 11 of his 14 career wins by tap.
Path to the UFC
Barnes turned professional in 2014 and cut his teeth almost exclusively on the California regional circuit, fighting again and again under the Gladiator Challenge banner. He won his first four bouts, all by first-round stoppage, before getting an early reality check in 2015 against rising blue-chip prospect AJ McKee Jr. at Bellator 141, who knocked him out in the opening round. Rather than derail him, the loss began a pattern that would define his career: a fighter who could submit almost anyone in front of him, but who was vulnerable on the feet against heavier hitters.
Bellator run and the submission machine
Barnes became a fixture across both Gladiator Challenge and Bellator, stacking up chokes and joint locks. The fights that best capture his arc came in 2018. In January he dropped a bout to the experienced Chad George at Bellator 192 by second-round doctor stoppage, a setback against a seasoned gatekeeper. He answered emphatically in November at the Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 card, where he submitted veteran Albert Morales – a former UFC bantamweight – with a third-round armbar, one of the most notable scalps of his career and proof that his grappling could hang at a higher level.
Later career
Barnes continued to alternate flashes of brilliance with the recurring problem of takedown-free strikers. He absorbed a first-round head-kick knockout against Ryan Lilley at Bellator 214 in 2019, then bounced back with rear-naked choke and body-triangle submissions over the next two years. His most recent appearance came in October 2021 on Dana White's Contender Series, where he lost a hard-fought, three-round ground-and-pound battle to the heavy-handed Brazilian Pedro Falcão – another bout in which his elite grappling ultimately couldn't overcome a powerful, physical opponent.
Fighting style
Barnes is one of the purest submission grapplers in the regional ranks, with a finish rate of 93% and an extraordinary 11 of his wins coming by submission – rear-naked chokes, armbars, an inverted triangle and a body triangle among them – against just two knockouts and a single decision. He fights to drag opponents to the mat and hunt the finish, and when he gets there he rarely fails to capitalize. The flip side is equally clear in the record: four of his five losses have come by knockout or TKO, a stark illustration of a striking defense that has repeatedly let him down against bigger punchers and kickers before he can impose his grappling.
Career highlights
- Armbar of Albert Morales — submitted former UFC bantamweight Albert Morales in the third round, the standout win of his career.
- Contender Series appearance — reached Dana White's Contender Series in 2021, the highest-profile stage of his journey.
- Elite submission rate — 11 of his 14 wins came by submission for a 93% finish rate, among the most grappling-dominant records on the regional scene.
