Barberena built his reputation by wrecking hype trains. In January 2016 he handed unbeaten phenom Sage Northcutt his first pro loss with a second-round arm-triangle submission at UFC on FOX 18, then outpointed once-undefeated Warlley Alves over three rounds at UFC 198. A 2016 decision loss to Colby Covington and a 2017 decision defeat to a rising Leon Edwards showed the gap to the division's elite, but in between he stopped Joe Proctor in the first round. In 2018 he flattened veteran Jake Ellenberger with a first-round TKO, cementing his standing as a dangerous gatekeeper.

Wars, setbacks and a signature upset

The next stretch was the kind of brutal, back-and-forth schedule that defined Barberena. He absorbed punishment in three-round losses to Vicente Luque and Randy Brown in 2019, then weathered a rough patch before reeling off a memorable run in 2021–2022. He outworked unbeaten Darian Weeks, edged veteran Matt Brown by split decision, and authored the signature win of his career – a second-round TKO of former champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 276 in July 2022. The back half of his run was tougher: submission losses to Rafael dos Anjos and Gunnar Nelson, a decision loss to Makhmud Muradov, and a 2024 submission defeat to Gerald Meerschaert.

Fighting style

Barberena is the archetypal pressure brawler. Eleven of his 18 wins have come by knockout or TKO, and his game is built on volume, forward movement and a granite chin that lets him walk through fire to land his own. He blends that pressure with opportunistic grappling – his arm-triangle of Northcutt and his title-level scrambles prove the jiu-jitsu is real – but his style invites damage, and his record reflects it: many of his 12 losses came in grinding decisions and submissions against elite finishers. Win or lose, few fighters have delivered more honest, crowd-pleasing fights.
