Matt Brown bio
Personal background
Matt Brown is a retired UFC welterweight known as "The Immortal," one of the most relentless and heavy-handed pressure fighters of his era. Born January 10, 1981, in Ohio, Brown's path to the cage was anything but conventional: he survived a drug-fueled, troubled young adulthood – including a near-fatal overdose – before dedicating himself to fighting, a backstory that gave rise to his nickname. He built his game on wrestling and boxing and fought out of his own Immortal Fight Team in Ohio. At 6'0" with a 75-inch reach, Brown carried genuine knockout power and an iron chin through a 24-19 professional career and 17 wins inside the UFC.
Path to the UFC
Brown turned professional in 2007 and earned his break on season seven of The Ultimate Fighter, where he reached the welterweight tournament's later rounds before being submitted by eventual winner Amir Sadollah. The exposure landed him a UFC contract, and he picked up his official promotional debut win over Matt Arroyo at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale in 2008. Brown's early Octagon run was uneven – a split-decision loss to unbeaten Dong Hyun Kim, then wins over Ryan Thomas, Pete Sell and James Wilks.
Surviving the rough years
A grim 2010 nearly ended his run, as Brown was submitted three straight times – by Ricardo Almeida, Chris Lytle and Brian Foster. He steadied himself with a decision over John Howard, and from 2012 onward reinvented himself as a finisher. A unanimous-decision win over then-unbeaten Stephen Thompson in 2012 was followed by a knockout of Mike Swick.
The signature run
Brown's peak arrived in 2013 and 2014. He stopped Jordan Mein with brutal elbows, then flattened veteran Mike Pyle with a first-round knockout. A third-round TKO of Erick Silva in May 2014 – a wild, back-and-forth war – capped a seven-fight win streak and pushed him to the brink of a title shot. He came up short in a five-round main-event loss to future champion Robbie Lawler, then dropped a decision to Johny Hendricks, before submitting Tim Means with a guillotine in 2015.
Veteran years and finale
The back half of Brown's career was a gauntlet. He absorbed losses to Demian Maia, Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone, but kept delivering vintage moments – a first-round elbow knockout of Diego Sanchez in 2017 and a knockout of Ben Saunders in 2019. After a stoppage win over Dhiego Lima, he closed his career in fitting fashion: a first-round knockout of Court McGee in May 2023.
Fighting style
Brown was a pressure-and-pace brawler who fought every minute as if it might be his last. His finishing rate is exceptional – 16 of his 24 wins came by knockout and six more by submission, leaving only two decisions. He wore opponents down with forward marching, dirty boxing in the clinch, knees and fight-ending elbows, and his durability let him survive damage and turn fights around late. The flip side was a vulnerability on the mat: 10 of his 19 losses came by submission, reflecting a career-long willingness to trade in deep water.
Career highlights
- Seven-fight win streak — a 2012–2014 surge featuring stoppages of Mike Pyle, Jordan Mein and Erick Silva that lifted him into welterweight title contention.
- One of the UFC's most prolific knockout artists — 16 of his 24 wins came by KO/TKO, built on relentless pressure, elbows and clinch striking.
- The Immortal's final bow — ended a 16-year career with a first-round knockout of Court McGee in 2023.
