Lyman Good bio
Personal background
Lyman Good is a Puerto Rican-American welterweight, nicknamed "Cyborg," who carved out a long professional career across Ring of Combat, the IFL, Bellator and the UFC. Born May 26, 1985, and raised in the Spanish Harlem section of New York City by his mother alongside his two sisters, Good was steered toward martial arts as a teenager as an outlet for his energy. He found a home at Team Tiger Schulmann, where he earned a black belt and went on to coach, eventually reaching the rank of third-degree black belt under Daniel "Tiger" Schulmann. A naturally powerful 6'0" welterweight with a 74-inch reach, Good built his game on concussive striking backed by sound grappling honed in the Tiger Schulmann system.
Path to the pros
Good turned professional in 2005 on the New York-area regional scene, fighting for Ring of Combat before moving up the ladder. By 2007 he was testing himself against established names, decisioning Mike Dolce in the International Fight League. That run earned him a place in Bellator, where he became the promotion's inaugural welterweight champion and first welterweight tournament winner – a foundation that set up the next decade of his career.
Bellator run and championship years
Good's Bellator tenure produced some of his defining moments. In 2009 he submitted veteran Hector Urbina by rear-naked choke at Bellator 2, part of a tournament run that vaulted him to the top of the division. His first real setback came in 2010, when undefeated wrestling ace Ben Askren outpointed him by decision at Bellator 33, a loss that handed Good a hard lesson against elite grappling. He answered with more tournament wins, including a 2012 decision over the experienced Jim Wallhead at Bellator 74, before a 2013 decision over Dante Rivera at Bellator 95.
CFFC resurgence and the UFC
Good rebuilt his momentum on the regional circuit, knocking out Matt Secor in the first round at CFFC 36 in 2014. A planned title fight against Jonavin Webb later that year ended as a no contest after an accidental eye poke. He stayed on track with a first-round rear-naked-choke finish of Nah-shon Burrell at CFFC 48 in 2015, which earned him a short-notice UFC debut. He made the most of it, stopping Andrew Craig with punches in the second round at UFC Fight Night 71. His Octagon run was uneven from there: a 2017 decision loss to Elizeu Zaleski was followed by a sharp first-round knockout of Ben Saunders at UFC 230 in 2018. He was then submitted in the opening round by grappling great Demian Maia in 2019, before rebounding with a third-round stoppage of Chance Rencountre at UFC 244. His final bout in the data was a 2020 decision loss to surging contender Belal Muhammad.
Fighting style
Good is a knockout artist first: 11 of his 21 wins came by KO/TKO, with three submissions rounding out a 67% finish rate. His best work happens on the feet, where his power and timing have ended fights in a single exchange, but his Tiger Schulmann grounding also gave him a reliable submission game, evidenced by his rear-naked-choke finishes. The book on Good, written across his six losses, is that high-level grapplers like Askren and Maia could neutralize his offense and drag him into their world – but at his best, few welterweights of his era hit harder.
Career highlights
- Inaugural Bellator welterweight champion — Good won the promotion's first welterweight tournament to become its first 170-pound titleholder, the signature achievement of his career.
- UFC debut winner on short notice — he stopped Andrew Craig in his Octagon bow at UFC Fight Night 71 and later scored a first-round KO of Ben Saunders at UFC 230.
- Two-decade pro with a 67% finish rate — across 29 pro fights spanning four major promotions, Good closed out 14 of his wins inside the distance, mostly by knockout.
