Sheldon Westcott bio
Personal background
Sheldon Westcott is a Canadian welterweight and former UFC fighter who built his name on the Western Canadian regional scene and a memorable run on reality television. Born August 20, 1984, in St. Albert, Alberta, Westcott fights out of Complete Fitness and Martial Arts and trained for much of his career under coach Craig "Couchie" Malin, earning his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt along the way. A rangy 6'1" competitor, he developed into a grappling-heavy fighter whose game centered on top control and chokes, leaning on his size and submission instincts to drag opponents into deep water. By the time he reached the sport's biggest stage, he had finished six of his eight wins, a finishing reputation that defined his regional run.
Path to the UFC
Westcott debuted as a professional in 2007, dropping his first bout by decision before settling in as a fixture on the Alberta circuit, most notably with the Maximum Fighting Championship. He twice shared the cage with King of the Cage veteran Thomas Denny, fighting to a draw at MFC 28 in February 2011 before winning the rematch by decision at MFC 30 four months later. Earlier in his run he twice defeated Tom Aaron, in 2008 and again in 2009, pieces of an 8-1 record that earned him a coveted spot on the cast of The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canada vs. Australia.
The Ultimate Fighter and UFC run
On the TUF Nations show, Westcott went on a tear, submitting Daniel Kelly with an arm-triangle choke and then Vik Grujic with a slick Von Flue choke – both in exhibition bouts – to reach the competition's final. The final itself, in April 2014, did not go his way: unbeaten prospect Elias Theodorou stopped him with punches and elbows in the second round. Westcott rebounded inside the Octagon in January 2016 at UFC 195, grinding out Edgar Garcia with first-round ground-and-pound for a statement win that showcased his control-and-finish formula at its best.
Fighting style
Westcott was a grappler first, using his height and length to drag opponents into his world and finish from top position – his record reflects it, with 3 of his 9 wins by submission and several others by ground strikes against an overall finish rate near 78%. His best moments came when he could impose control and hunt chokes, as the back-to-back TUF submissions demonstrated. The flip side was that against polished strikers and decorated opponents, he could be out-positioned, and two of his three career losses came by decision while the other was a stoppage. At his peak he was a relentless, finish-minded welterweight who rarely left rounds in doubt when he got the fight to the floor.
