Walt Harris bio
Personal background
Walt Harris is an American heavyweight who competed in the UFC, an explosive knockout puncher from Alabama known as “The Big Ticket.” Born June 10, 1983, in Homewood, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, Harris came to mixed martial arts later than most: he was a college basketball player, and only began training around 2008 as a way to stay in shape after his hoops career ended. Standing a towering 6’5”, he brought athletic length and serious one-punch power to the heavyweight division, fighting out of SBG Alabama. Carrying a 13-10 record built almost entirely on stoppages, Harris was one of the more physically gifted big men of his era, even as consistency proved elusive.
Path to the UFC
Harris turned pro in 2011 and made his name as a finisher on the regional scene, knocking out the likes of unbeaten Anthony Hamilton in the first round at Superior Cage Combat 4. An early loss to Chris Barnett was a learning experience, and he reached the UFC by way of The Ultimate Fighter, dropping a decision to Jared Rosholt at the TUF 18 Finale in 2013. His early Octagon run was rocky — a 2014 head-kick KO loss to Nikita Krylov and a stoppage loss to Soa Palelei — that tested his footing in the division.
The Big Ticket finds his footing
Harris steadied himself with a 2016 first-round knockout of Cody East at UFC 197, then absorbed a decision loss to Shamil Abdurakhimov. He followed with stoppages of Chase Sherman and Cyril Asker in 2017. The back half of that year was unkind: he was submitted by former champion Fabrício Werdum and then lost to Mark Godbeer via an illegal kick. He rebounded with a 2018 knockout of Daniel Spitz, while a bout with Andrei Arlovski that December was ruled a no contest.
Career-best stretch and the top of the division
Harris reeled off the most impressive run of his career in 2019, blitzing unbeaten prospect Serghei Spivac in the first round and then producing a sensational flying-knee-and-cross knockout of grappling legend Aleksei Oleinik. That surge pushed him into the upper tier of the heavyweight division and a 2020 main-event opportunity against former champion Alistair Overeem, who stopped him by ground-and-pound. Harris closed out his run with stoppage losses to Alexander Volkov in 2020 and Marcin Tybura in 2021.
Fighting style
Harris was the definition of a finish-or-be-finished heavyweight: every one of his 13 wins came by knockout, a 100% finish rate among his victories, and all of them were violent, early stoppages powered by his length and explosiveness. His arsenal featured fast hands, flying knees and the kind of athleticism rarely seen at heavyweight. The flip side was consistency and durability against elite competition — he was stopped in 6 of his 10 losses (5 KO/TKO, 1 submission), and high-level grapplers and pressure fighters were able to weather his early storm and turn fights against him.
Career highlights
- Highlight-reel knockout of a legend — flattened veteran Aleksei Oleinik with a flying knee and left cross in 2019.
- Perfect finishing rate — all 13 of his career wins came by knockout, underscoring his rare heavyweight power.
- Main-event heavyweight — rose to headline against former champion Alistair Overeem at the peak of his run.
