BIO
Early Life & Athletic Foundation
Austen Douglas Lane was born on November 9, 1987, in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Iola, Wisconsin. In high school, he stood out playing both offense and defense in football, leading in tackles and sacks before earning a college scholarship. He went on to be a dominant defensive end at Murray State University, setting school records with 29 sacks and 55 tackles for loss, earning multiple All-American honors and becoming the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
NFL Career & Transition to MMA
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Lane began his professional football career in the NFL, playing with the Jaguars and later spending time with the Chiefs, Lions, and Bears before retiring from football in 2015. Even while playing in the NFL, he trained in MMA and mixed martial arts steadily became his path forward. After stopping his amateur MMA opponents—all by knockout—he debuted professionally in 2017 and quickly amassed a series of first-round finishes.
Early MMA Success & Contender Series
Competing in regional promotions and Fury FC, Lane built a strong pro record before making his way onto Dana White’s Contender Series in September 2022, where he secured a first-round knockout over Richard Jacobi and earned a UFC contract. His powerful striking and finishing style showed promise as he transitioned to the world’s biggest MMA promotion.
UFC Journey & Record
Lane made his UFC debut in June 2023 against Justin Tafa, but a clash of eyes led to a no contest. In September 2023, he faced Tafa again and lost via first-round knockout. A rematch in April 2024 against Jhonata Diniz ended similarly with a second-round knockout loss. Seeking redemption, he earned his first UFC victory in October 2024 with a unanimous decision over Robelis Despaigne. At UFC Vegas 103 in March 2025, he suffered a second-round knockout loss to Mario Pinto. He’s now set to face Vitor Petrino on July 12, 2025, in Nashville, marking his first fight in nearly four months.
Physical Attributes & Fighting Style
Standing 6′6″, weighing around 249 lb, with an 80″ reach, Austen is a striking-heavy, orthodox-stance heavyweight known for explosive power and precise boxing. With 11 TKO/KO and 1 submission in his 13 wins, he relies on aggressive stand-up, fast-paced striking, and occasional grappling, leveraging the athleticism and explosiveness he developed in football.
Personality & Team Environment
Training out of Bulldog Boxing, Lane brings a gritty and determined mindset to every fight. Known for intense training ethic and focus, he transitioned successfully from NFL player to professional fighter. Despite career setbacks, he’s shown resilience and continues to adapt and learn in the Octagon.
