Earning the call

Rather than fold after the Contender Series setback, Smotherman delivered the signature highlight of his career. In November 2023 he knocked out Mando Gutierrez with a third-round flying knee, a spectacular finish that announced him as a legitimate UFC prospect. He kept winning on the regional circuit through 2024, and when the UFC needed a short-notice replacement in October 2024, Smotherman seized it — outpointing the more experienced Jake Hadley over three rounds for a unanimous-decision win in his promotional debut.

Testing the elite
