Regional grind and key tests

Among the defining bouts of his climb was a 2017 decision loss to Vince Murdock, a competitive setback against a quality regional opponent. Later that year, his bout with Chepe Mariscal at HFC 34 was ruled a no-contest. Deaton pushed through both, returning to the win column on the regional scene and continuing to rack up the submissions that became his calling card.

Step up in competition

The biggest stages brought the stiffest tests. In 2021, Deaton faced the highly regarded Alejandro Flores in the PFL and dropped a decision against one of the circuit's most experienced featherweights. He earned his shot in the UFC and made his promotional debut in 2023 against Joe Solecki, a fellow grappler who caught him with a second-round rear-naked choke. Deaton's run on the sport's top circuits showcased both his toughness and the steep jump in competition at the elite level.

Fighting style

Deaton is a submission specialist whose game is built around aggressive grappling, scrambles, and a deep finishing arsenal on the ground. Of his 17 wins, nine have come by submission, with guillotines, rear-naked chokes, and a D'Arce choke all among his finishes, an excellent 71% finish rate that reflects how dangerous he is once a fight hits the mat. His undersized lightweight frame and developing striking have been the limiting factors against top-tier opposition, where stronger or more polished strikers have been able to keep the fight where they want it. At his best, though, he is a tenacious, opportunistic grappler who is always a single scramble away from a finish.
