UFC career

Saenz announced himself immediately, winning a decision over Nolan Ticman in his August 2014 debut. He followed with the biggest win of his career in February 2015, upsetting veteran Iuri Alcântara, then edged Sirwan Kakai by decision in August 2015 to push to 3–0 in the Octagon. The hot start earned him a marquee assignment: a December 2015 bout on the historic UFC 194 card against former champion and bantamweight icon Urijah Faber, who handed Saenz his first UFC loss by decision.

Veteran grind

From there, Saenz settled into the role of a tough, respected gatekeeper. He was stopped by Eddie Wineland in July 2016 and lost a decision to Augusto Mendes in January 2017, but bounced back with two of his most notable wins. In December 2017 he out-pointed a young Merab Dvalishvili — who would later become UFC bantamweight champion — and in May 2018 he beat veteran Henry Briones by decision. The back end of his run was tougher: he was knocked out by Marlon Vera in the first round in March 2019 and stopped by Jonathan Martinez in August 2020.

Fighting style

Saenz was a wrestling-based, decision-oriented fighter who relied on his elite grappling pedigree, pace and toughness rather than one-punch power. Seven of his 12 wins came by decision, with three knockouts and two submissions rounding out the ledger and a 42% finish rate that reflects his grinding approach. His best work came when he could dictate where a fight took place, leaning on takedowns and top control against opponents who could not match his wrestling. The honest weakness was durability against the division's biggest hitters: four of his career losses came by knockout, including stoppages by Wineland, Vera and Martinez that defined the back half of his UFC tenure.
