BIO
Early Life and Background
Marlon Andres Vera Delgado was born on December 2, 1992, in Chone, a small city in Manabi Province on Ecuador's Pacific coast. Growing up in a modest background, Vera discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu at age 16 in the nearby city of Guayaquil, the largest urban center in Ecuador. The sport provided him both a physical outlet and a pathway toward personal growth. Vera committed himself to BJJ training with the focus and discipline that would later characterize his entire fighting career. His journey from the provinces to the capital city represented the kind of upward mobility that combat sports can provide to talented athletes in Latin America. Vera built his foundation in grappling first, developing the submission prowess that would eventually define his fighting identity.
MMA Debut and Rise to UFC
Vera's transition to mixed martial arts began in February 2012 when he competed in his first professional fight on the Latin American regional circuit. He spent the next several years grinding through promotions across Mexico, South America, and other regional scenes, compiling an 8-1-1 record before attempting to break through to bigger opportunities. In 2014, Vera tried out for The Ultimate Fighter, seeking that UFC platform that could elevate his career. Though he didn't win the show, his performance caught enough attention that he eventually earned a UFC contract. What followed was one of the most impressive careers in bantamweight history—Vera has fought more than 30 times in the UFC, becoming one of the promotion's longest-tenured bantamweights. Over more than a decade, he's shared the octagon with elite competition and produced some of the most memorable finishes in the division's history.
Fighting Style and Attributes
Vera fights out of an orthodox stance and has built a submission-heavy arsenal that reflects his jiu-jitsu roots. Of his 23 career victories, ten have come by submission, eight by knockout, and five by decision, demonstrating his versatility across all finishing methods. His most famous submission—the devastating rear-naked choke—has appeared repeatedly on highlight reels. While not primarily a striker, Vera's hands are competent and dangerous at closer ranges. His strength lies in his ability to close distance, initiate grappling exchanges on his terms, and then dominate his opponent through superior positional control and submission threat. Vera's cardio is exceptional, allowing him to maintain high pressure throughout all three rounds.
