Journey Newson is an American mixed martial artist who competed in the UFC's lighter weight classes, fighting out of Impact Jiu-Jitsu in Beaverton, Oregon. Born on March 7, 1989, in Beaverton, Oregon, he came to combat sports as an adult, beginning training around 2008 to better prepare himself should he ever need to defend himself. His coaches quickly recognized a natural aptitude, and Newson developed into a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under the Impact Jiu-Jitsu banner while folding in taekwondo and boxing. Standing a compact 5'5" with a 67-inch reach, the Portland-based fighter built a well-rounded game that blended that grappling pedigree with genuine knockout power.
Path to the UFC
Newson turned professional in 2015 and made his name on the Pacific Northwest regional scene, fighting for promotions such as King of the Cage and CageSport. He captured the CageSport bantamweight title and added a Prime Fighting championship, knocking out and stopping opponents along the way.
