Building toward the big stage

Romero answered the setback by returning to the win column in November 2019, outpointing Israel Delgado over three rounds at Combate 50 in Fresno to prove he could grind out a decision when the finish wasn't there. After a layoff, he picked up another first-round knockout, this time over Andy Perez at Combate Global in June 2021, pushing his momentum toward the sport's proving grounds. That momentum carried him to Dana White's Contender Series in July 2022, the highest-profile fight of his career to date. There he faced Dennis Buzukja and dropped a decision, a competitive loss against a fellow prospect on the UFC's biggest audition platform. He later took part in a Combat Jiu-Jitsu Worlds grappling bout that was ruled a draw, underscoring his comfort on the mat.

Romero is a finisher first. With an 83% finish rate and a 6-2 record, his stoppages split almost evenly between submissions and knockouts – three of his wins have come by choke and two by strikes, with only a single decision on his ledger.
