Fernandez claimed the CFFC light heavyweight title with a second-round TKO of Peter New at CFFC 128 in December 2023, then began racking up wins that signaled he was ready for a bigger stage. Along the way he ventured onto the grappling mats and beat UFC veteran Eryk Anders by decision at Fury Pro Grappling 10 in May 2024, a result that underscored how far his ground game had come. He defended his momentum in the cage with a first-round knockout of the experienced Gregg Ellis at CFFC 138 in December 2024 – a bout that carried his name in the main event – and followed with a unanimous decision over Christian Edwards at CFFC 142 in May 2025.

Contender Series and the UFC

Before his UFC look, Fernandez again flashed his grappling credentials by submitting fellow UFC veteran Phil Hawes with a first-round anaconda choke at a CFFC BJJ event in July 2025. He then sealed his contract in spectacular fashion on Dana White's Contender Series in October 2025, knocking out Brazil's Rafael Pergentino in roughly 15 seconds – one of the fastest finishes of the season.
