BIO
Abusupiyan “Abus” Magomedov is a Russian-born German mixed martial artist competing in the UFC’s middleweight division. Known for his fast starts, powerful striking, and international experience, Magomedov has built a career across multiple organizations before reaching the UFC.
Magomedov was born on September 2, 1990, in Dagestan, Russia, a region renowned for producing elite wrestlers and fighters. He later moved to Germany, where he began his professional MMA career in 2010. Fighting primarily in Europe, Magomedov developed into a versatile competitor with a balanced game of striking and grappling. His tall frame for the division (standing 6’2”) and ability to mix techniques made him a difficult opponent for middleweights and light heavyweights alike.
Over the course of his career, Magomedov competed in several prominent international organizations, including M-1 Global, KSW, and the Professional Fighters League (PFL). He gained recognition in the PFL in 2018, advancing to the middleweight finals after a string of strong performances. Although he lost the championship bout to Louis Taylor, his run in the league established him as a legitimate contender on the global stage.
Magomedov built a reputation for his ability to finish fights quickly. Many of his victories came in the first round, showcasing his aggressive striking and opportunistic grappling. He also demonstrated durability and experience by competing in multiple countries and against a wide variety of fighting styles, further shaping his all-around skill set.
In 2021, Magomedov signed with the UFC, marking the next chapter of his career. He made his long-awaited debut in September 2022 at UFC Paris against Dustin Stoltzfus. In one of the most impressive first appearances in recent memory, Magomedov secured a knockout victory just 19 seconds into the fight with a front kick followed by punches. The performance immediately put him on the map in the middleweight division and earned him a Performance of the Night bonus.
Magomedov’s next high-profile fight came in July 2023 against former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland. Despite a strong opening, Magomedov faded after the first round, and Strickland took control to win by second-round TKO. The loss showed areas for growth, particularly in endurance and pacing, but also underscored Magomedov’s willingness to face elite competition.
He returned to the Octagon in 2024, determined to regain momentum. In March 2024, Magomedov fought Caio Borralho, a rising Brazilian contender, and lost by unanimous decision after three competitive rounds. Later in the year, he bounced back with a convincing win over Warlley Alves, using crisp striking and defensive grappling to secure a unanimous decision.
Magomedov’s fighting style is defined by explosive striking, heavy kicks, and the ability to overwhelm opponents early. While his preference is to keep fights standing, he has shown grappling ability when needed, including a knack for opportunistic submissions. His challenge has been managing energy across longer fights, but his fast starts make him a dangerous opponent for anyone in the division.
Beyond his athletic skills, Magomedov’s career reflects the increasingly international nature of MMA. Born in Dagestan, competing across Europe, and eventually settling in Germany, he represents a blend of fighting traditions. His path to the UFC demonstrates persistence, having competed for over a decade in multiple organizations before finally earning a roster spot on MMA’s biggest stage.
Still active in the middleweight division, Magomedov continues to test himself against top-level opposition. With knockout power and years of international experience, he remains a fighter capable of delivering highlight moments and pushing toward contender status.
