Albert Duraev bio
Personal background
Albert "Machete" Duraev is a Russian middleweight competing in the UFC, born January 5, 1989. A product of Russia's deep grappling culture, Duraev built his game on a foundation of sambo and wrestling, the disciplines that turned him into one of the most relentless submission and ground-and-pound artists on the European regional scene. Now based in the United States and training out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, the 5'11" middleweight earned his "Machete" nickname for a cutting, finish-or-bust style. Before he ever reached the UFC, he was already a former two-division champion in the ACB/ACA promotion, one of Russia's premier organizations.
Path to the UFC
Duraev turned professional in 2011 and made an immediate statement, submitting veteran Xavier Foupa-Pokam by triangle choke that November under the M-1 Global banner. The road was not smooth – a 2012 stoppage loss to Ramazan Emeev was an early reality check – but Duraev used those setbacks to sharpen a brutally effective grappling game. He surged with a 2015 unanimous-decision win over the highly regarded Sergey Khandozhko and a 2017 second-round rear-naked choke of UFC veteran Clifford Starks, stacking the kind of wins that eventually drew the UFC's attention through Dana White's Contender Series in 2021.
Inside the UFC
Duraev made his Octagon debut a memorable one at UFC 267 in October 2021, grinding out a unanimous-decision win over Roman Kopylov with the smothering top control that is his calling card. The level jump caught up with him in June 2022, when Joaquin Buckley earned a second-round TKO via doctor stoppage after Duraev's eye swelled shut. He bounced back in March 2023 with a hard-fought split-decision victory over Chidi Njokuani, before running into a tough night against Jun Yong Park in July 2023, who took his back and finished him with a second-round rear-naked choke.
Fighting style
Duraev is a grappling-first fighter who wins by imposing his will on the mat. Nine of his 16 wins have come by submission – with the rear-naked choke a recurring weapon – and his 75% finish rate reflects how aggressively he hunts for the stoppage once a fight hits the canvas. His takedowns, chain wrestling and heavy top pressure let him drown opponents under positional control and ground strikes. The clear vulnerability is on the feet: all four of his career knockout losses have come via strikes, underscoring that the danger for Duraev lies in extended striking exchanges where his grappling can't take over. When he closes distance and gets the fight to the ground, however, he is a deeply uncomfortable matchup for anyone in the division.
