Finding his footing in the UFC

Gutierrez stumbled in his Octagon debut at The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale in late 2018, submitted by Raoni Barcelos. He answered emphatically, going on a long unbeaten run: decisions over Ryan MacDonald and Geraldo de Freitas in 2019, a 2020 leg-kick TKO of Vince Morales, a draw with Cody Durden, and 2021 wins over Andre Ewell and Felipe Colares.

Signature wins

The peak of that surge came in 2022. Gutierrez stopped Batgerel Danaa with a spinning backfist and elbows in March, then delivered the defining win of his career in November at UFC 281, knocking out former lightweight champion and UFC Hall of Famer Frankie Edgar with a knee in the first round – the final bout of Edgar's career. It was a statement finish that vaulted Gutierrez up the bantamweight ladder.

Contender level

The step up to the division's elite proved demanding. Gutierrez dropped a 2023 decision to Pedro Munhoz, rebounded against Alatengheili, then lost a five-round decision to Yadong Song. He answered with decision wins over Quang Le in 2024 and John Castañeda in 2025, before a unanimous-decision loss to the unbeaten Farid Basharat at UFC 320 in October 2025.

Fighting style

Gutierrez is a measured, technical kickboxer whose calling cards are punishing leg kicks and a high-IQ, attritional approach – reflected in a record where 12 of his 22 wins have come by decision and a finish rate around 45 percent. His chin and durability stand out: he has never been knocked out, and only one of his career losses has come by stoppage.
