Flyweight championship reign

His ascent hit a speed bump in 2019 with a decision loss to Jussier Formiga, but he rebounded by beating future champion Alexandre Pantoja and submitting Tim Elliott. In February 2020 he stopped Joseph Benavidez, then submitted him in a July 2020 rematch to claim the UFC Flyweight Championship. Figueiredo defended with a first-round guillotine of Alex Perez at UFC 255, setting up one of the sport’s great rivalries.

The Moreno tetralogy

Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno fought four times. Their December 2020 classic ended in a majority draw; Moreno took the belt by submission in their June 2021 rematch; Figueiredo reclaimed it by unanimous decision in January 2022; and Moreno won the rubber match by doctor stoppage in 2023. The rivalry defined an era at flyweight.

Move to bantamweight

Figueiredo moved up to bantamweight in late 2023 and started strong, decisioning Rob Font, submitting former champion Cody Garbrandt at UFC 300, and outpointing Marlon Vera. Contender-level competition then proved tougher: he dropped decisions to Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen, rebounded with a split nod over Montel Jackson, then lost to Umar Nurmagomedov and was submitted by Yadong Song in 2026.

Fighting style

Figueiredo is a rare two-way finisher for the lighter weights, with a remarkably balanced 9 knockouts and 9 submissions among his 25 wins and a 72% finish rate. He pairs heavy, compact power punching with an opportunistic, high-level jiu-jitsu game built on guillotines and back takes. At his peak he was the most dangerous flyweight in the world, able to end a fight from anywhere. The honest caveats are durability and cardio against the very best, which surfaced in his five-round losses and in tough outings at bantamweight against larger, rangier contenders.
