Danny Henry bio
Personal background
Danny "The Hatchet" Henry is a Scottish featherweight who fought in the UFC out of Edinburgh, Scotland. Born on July 17, 1988, in Edinburgh, he built his career at Higher Level Martial Arts under longtime coach James Doolan, who guided his development from the regional scene to the global stage. Henry earned his reputation as one of Scotland's most exciting finishers, a fighter equally comfortable knocking opponents out or submitting them. Standing 5'11" with a 73-inch reach, he carried length and a relentless finishing instinct into the featherweight division.
Path to the UFC
Henry turned professional in 2011 and made his name on the UK and South African circuits, fighting seven times for South Africa's EFC promotion after the organization discovered him through his coach. He compiled a 10-2 record before earning his UFC call, beating notable regional names along the way, including a fourth-round stoppage of the experienced Boyd Allen and avenging an earlier loss to Igeu Kabesa with a first-round D'Arce choke. That body of work, full of finishes, earned him a shot in the world's biggest promotion.
UFC run
Henry debuted in July 2017 at UFC Fight Night 113, edging unbeaten Daniel Teymur by decision in a Fight of the Night performance. He followed it with the signature moment of his career in March 2018, submitting undefeated prospect Hakeem Dawodu with a lightning-fast first-round guillotine choke. The competition then stiffened: in March 2019 he was caught by Dan Ige in a first-round rear-naked choke, and in July 2020 at UFC 251 on Fight Island he fell to veteran Makwan Amirkhani by first-round anaconda choke. Those results closed out his UFC tenure at 2-2.
Fighting style
Henry was one of the more dangerous finishers to come out of the UK scene, with a remarkable 83% finish rate across his wins. His ledger is evenly split between knockouts and submissions – five of each among his 12 victories – making him a genuine threat to end a fight standing or on the canvas. His strengths were aggression and finishing instinct, capable of switching from a guillotine to ground-and-pound in the same sequence. The honest weakness exposed late in his UFC run was his own grappling defense, with both of his promotional losses coming by submission against elite competition.
Career highlights
- 39-second submission of Hakeem Dawodu — submitted an undefeated prospect with a first-round guillotine for the standout win of his UFC career.
- Fight of the Night debut — beat unbeaten Daniel Teymur by decision in a war to open his promotional run.
- 83% finish rate — ended 10 of his 12 wins early, split evenly between knockouts and submissions.
