Phil Rowe bio
Personal background
Phil Rowe, the welterweight known as "The Fresh Prince," is an American mixed martial artist born on July 18, 1990, and raised in Queens, New York. Rowe came to combat sports late and through an unusual door: a former basketball player with no traditional fighting foundation, he walked into an MMA gym and built himself up from the ground floor, showing up and grinding until he belonged. Before fighting full time he worked as a well logging engineer and spent time at Daytona State College in Florida. Now based in Orlando, he trains out of Fusion X-Cel Performance and holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Julien Williams. At 6'3" with an 80-inch reach, he is one of the rangier strikers in the division, and that frame is central to how he fights.
Path to the UFC
Rowe turned professional in 2014 and absorbed his lessons the hard way, dropping his first two bouts before finding traction on the regional circuit. He worked through promotions across the United States, stacking finishes and refining the long, aggressive striking that would become his calling card. His breakthrough came on Dana White's Contender Series in August 2019, where he overcame an early scare to stop Leon Shahbazyan with punches in the third round – the only fight of the night to earn a UFC contract.
UFC run
Rowe's promotional debut did not go his way: he dropped a 2021 decision to Gabe Green at UFC 258, and around that same period tested himself in submission grappling against the likes of Gabriel Checco and Kody Steele. He answered back in the cage. In July 2021 he stopped undefeated prospect Orion Cosce with strikes in the second round, then opened 2022 by halting veteran Jason Witt, again by second-round TKO. His signature UFC night came in December 2022, when he weathered and then finished gritty veteran Niko Price by third-round TKO. The deeper waters proved harder: he was outpointed by former title challenger Neil Magny in a 2023 split decision and lost a unanimous nod to Jake Matthews at UFC 302 in 2024. Between bouts he also stepped into Karate Combat, where he was caught by grappling ace Craig Jones. He steadied the ship in June 2025 with a third-round TKO of Ange Loosa, but then dropped consecutive decisions to Seok Hyeon Ko in November 2025 and a tight split nod to Jean-Paul Lebosnoyani in February 2026.
Fighting style
Rowe is a finisher first and foremost – every one of his wins has come inside the distance, split between seven knockouts and four submissions, with no decision victories on his ledger. He uses his length to manage range and pour on volume, and his jiu-jitsu black belt gives him a real submission threat the moment a scramble opens up. The recurring theme in his losses tells the rest of the story: six of his seven defeats have come by decision, a sign that when opponents survive his early pressure and drag him into the championship rounds and judges' scorecards, the math has often gone against him. He is at his most dangerous when he can impose tempo and force the action to a finish.
Career highlights
- Contender Series contract — rallied from an early scare to stop Leon Shahbazyan in 2019, earning the only UFC deal handed out that night.
- 100% finish rate — all 11 of his career wins have come by knockout or submission, underscoring a relentless, finish-or-nothing approach.
- Signature UFC stoppages — back-to-back-era TKOs of veterans Niko Price and Jason Witt showcased his length, body work and killer instinct on the sport's biggest stage.
