A winning run on the regional scene

From 2018 onward Barnes went unbeaten for several years. He knocked out Jason Keen in the first round to start 2019, then fought to a majority draw with the experienced Adam Mays (6-5) that summer – the lone blemish on an otherwise dominant stretch. He closed out 2019 with a first-round stoppage of veteran Jay Ellis and opened 2021 by knocking out Erick Lozano in the opening round at Showcase MMA 16. The streak made him one of the more dangerous finishers on the Southeast circuit and earned him a call to the sport's biggest proving ground.

Dana White's Contender Series

In October 2021, Barnes got his shot on Dana White's Contender Series, stepping in against the unbeaten Joseph Holmes (5-1) after originally being slated to face Cody Brundage. Holmes, a fellow grappler, controlled the fight and locked up a second-round rear-naked choke, handing Barnes the second loss of his career. It was a familiar pattern: every defeat on his record has come by submission, the clearest counterpoint to his own knockout-heavy offense.

Fighting style

Barnes is a finisher in the truest sense – all nine of his pro fights have ended inside the distance, with a 100% finish rate across his decided bouts. Of his six wins, four have come by KO/TKO and two by submission, with not a single decision victory on his ledger. His calling card is heavy hands and fast, first-round aggression; the overwhelming majority of his finishes have come in the opening round. The vulnerability is on the mat: both of his losses came by rear-naked choke, exposing his submission defense as the area top-tier grapplers have targeted.
