BIO
Early Life & Background
Zhang Weili was born on August 13, 1989, in Handan, Hebei Province, China. She began training in sanda and kickboxing as a teenager, eventually transitioning into mixed martial arts in 2013. Fighting out of Beijing’s Black Tiger Fight Club, she quickly developed into a well-rounded athlete, blending aggressive striking with technical grappling. Known for her fierce discipline and commitment, Zhang rose through Kunlun Fight before earning her spot in the UFC.
MMA Debut & Rise to UFC
After debuting professionally in 2013, Zhang compiled an impressive record with multiple early finishes across Kunlun Fight, becoming their Women’s Strawweight Champion and defending it successfully. She entered the UFC in August 2018 and won her debut against Danielle Taylor by unanimous decision.
Zhang made history at UFC Shenzhen in August 2019 by defeating Jessica Andrade via a 42-second first-round TKO to become the first-ever UFC champion from China. She defended her title successfully against Joanna Jędrzejczyk in a legendary split decision that is often cited as one of the greatest women’s MMA fights of all time. Though she lost her belt to Rose Namajunas in 2021, both by knockout and then a close split decision in a rematch, Zhang rebounded to regain her championship by submitting Carla Esparza in November 2022, starting her second reign as strawweight champion.
Fighting Style & Attributes
Zhang stands at 5'4" with a 63-inch reach and fights from a switch stance. She is a power striker with finishing ability, boasting a high number of knockouts and submissions. Her fighting style blends sanda and Muay Thai striking with strong clinch work and a dangerous ground game.
She is known for her speed, explosive combinations, and relentless pressure. Zhang’s takedown defense is among the best in the division, and her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills allow her to threaten with submissions from multiple positions. Her cardio, adaptability, and ability to mix techniques seamlessly make her one of the most complete strawweight fighters in UFC history.
