Tatiana Suarez bio
Personal background
Tatiana Suarez is an American strawweight and one of the top contenders in the UFC's women's 115-pound division, carrying a professional record of 12-1. Born Tatiana Yadira Suarez on December 19, 1990, in Covina, California, she is of Mexican heritage and began wrestling at the age of three. She became one of the best freestyle wrestlers in the United States, earning back-to-back ASICS National High School Wrestler of the Year honors and twice medaling at the world championships, before a neck injury led to the discovery of thyroid cancer that derailed her Olympic ambitions. After beating cancer through surgery and radiation, she pivoted to jiu-jitsu and then MMA at the urging of her coaches. She fights out of Millennia MMA and, at 5'5" with a 66-inch reach, brings an elite wrestling base to the cage.
Path to the UFC
Suarez turned professional in 2014 and went unbeaten on the regional scene with Gladiator Challenge before earning a spot on The Ultimate Fighter season 23, where she was the first overall pick. She ran the table in the tournament – including a submission of JJ Aldrich – and capped it by submitting Amanda Cooper with a first-round D'Arce choke at the TUF 23 Finale in July 2016 to win the competition and her UFC contract.
Rise to title contention
Suarez announced herself as a problem for the entire division across a dominant unbeaten run. She decisioned the unbeaten Viviane Pereira in 2017, then submitted future flyweight champion Alexa Grasso with a first-round rear-naked choke in May 2018. That September she overwhelmed former champion Carla Esparza with ground-and-pound at UFC 228, and in June 2019 she outpointed Nina Nunes at UFC 238. After a long injury layoff, she returned in 2023 to submit Montana De La Rosa and then former champion Jéssica Andrade, both by second-round guillotine choke, vaulting her into a title shot.
Title challenge and rebound
Suarez challenged for the UFC Strawweight Championship in February 2025 at UFC 312, facing Weili Zhang over five rounds. She lost a unanimous decision – the only defeat of her career – but quickly reasserted herself as the division's top threat. In September 2025 she outpointed Amanda Lemos by unanimous decision, and in April 2026 she submitted Lupita Godinez with a second-round rear-naked choke at UFC 327, keeping herself firmly in the championship picture.
Fighting style
Suarez is one of the most feared grapplers in women's MMA, built on a world-class wrestling pedigree that makes her takedowns almost inevitable. Six of her wins have come by submission and two by knockout or TKO for a 67% finish rate, and once she puts an opponent on the mat she is relentless with ground-and-pound and chokes. Her takedown entries and top control are the spine of her game, and even in defeat her wrestling remained a constant threat. The lone question mark, exposed in the title loss to Weili Zhang, is whether she can impose that grappling on the very best strikers across a full 25 minutes.
Career highlights
- The Ultimate Fighter 23 winner — ran through the tournament and submitted Amanda Cooper in the final to launch her UFC career.
- UFC title challenger — earned a shot at the strawweight championship against Weili Zhang at UFC 312 after a decade-long unbeaten start.
- Submission win over a former champion — choked out former titleholder Jéssica Andrade with a second-round guillotine to secure her place at the top of the division.
