BIO
Alexsandro Pereira, better known as Alex “Poatan” Pereira, is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and former kickboxer who has rapidly become one of the most accomplished and feared strikers in UFC history. Born on July 7, 1987, in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, Pereira grew up in modest circumstances and faced challenges early in life. He worked as a bricklayer before finding his path in combat sports, initially through kickboxing, which would shape the foundation of his professional career.
Pereira’s striking journey began when he joined a local gym as a teenager, motivated to overcome personal struggles and find discipline through martial arts. Standing at 6’4” with a long reach, he developed a reputation for his devastating power, especially his trademark left hook. His style blended traditional kickboxing techniques with explosive knockout power, making him a dangerous opponent for anyone in the striking realm.
As a professional kickboxer, Pereira rose to international prominence competing in Glory Kickboxing, one of the sport’s premier organizations. He became a two-division champion in Glory, holding titles in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. His achievements included multiple title defenses and victories over elite strikers. During his Glory tenure, Pereira was recognized not only for his knockout finishes but also for his technical growth, showing patience and tactical awareness inside the ring.
Pereira transitioned into MMA in 2015, competing initially in regional promotions in Brazil. After developing his grappling and ground defense to complement his striking arsenal, he signed with the UFC in 2021. His arrival was met with significant attention, largely due to his history with then-middleweight champion Israel Adesanya—Pereira had previously defeated Adesanya twice in kickboxing, including a knockout victory.
Pereira’s UFC debut came at UFC 268 in November 2021, where he showcased his trademark striking by finishing Andreas Michailidis with a flying knee. His performances quickly established him as a rising contender in the middleweight division. Less than a year later, in November 2022 at UFC 281, Pereira fought Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Championship. In a dramatic fifth-round comeback, Pereira scored a TKO victory to claim the belt, completing a rapid ascent in the UFC and continuing his remarkable rivalry with Adesanya.
While he lost the rematch to Adesanya in April 2023, Pereira moved up to the light heavyweight division later that year. His size, power, and striking acumen carried over seamlessly. At UFC 295 in November 2023, he captured the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship by defeating Jiří Procházka via TKO, making him one of the few fighters in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes. He solidified his status further by defending the light heavyweight belt and continuing to build a reputation as one of the sport’s most dangerous knockout artists.
Pereira’s fighting style is rooted in his kickboxing pedigree. He relies on precise footwork, calculated pressure, and explosive power, particularly his left hook, which has ended multiple high-profile fights. While striking remains his bread and butter, Pereira has also worked to improve his grappling defense, takedown awareness, and overall MMA adaptability, ensuring that opponents cannot easily exploit him on the ground.
Beyond his fighting career, Pereira is admired for his resilience and personal transformation. He has openly spoken about overcoming alcoholism earlier in life, crediting martial arts with giving him structure and purpose. His nickname “Poatan,” meaning “Stone Hands” in the Tupi-Guarani language, reflects his reputation as one of the hardest hitters in combat sports.
Still actively competing at the highest levels of MMA, Pereira has already carved out a place in UFC history. From his days as a Glory double champion to becoming a two-division UFC champion, his journey showcases determination, adaptability, and extraordinary striking talent.
