Brianna Fortino bio
Personal background
Brianna Fortino, the American UFC strawweight known as “Tha Bull,” was born Anicia Brianna Van Buren on August 4, 1993, and grew up in Gilroy, California. Her nickname traces back to her grandfather, who called her “El Torito” – the baby bull – for the way she charged around as a child. After a difficult adolescence she left home young and moved in with her uncle, Strikeforce veteran Anthony Figueroa, at whose gym she first laced up gloves and started training kickboxing before adding the rest of her tools. A high-school wrestler and soccer player at Gilroy High, the compact 4'11" strawweight competes out of the renowned American Kickboxing Academy.
Path to the UFC
Fortino debuted professionally in 2012 with a first-round knockout of Charlene Gellner at Rogue Fights 20. Her early years were a grind of regional shows and learning fights, with decision losses to Stephanie Eggink and Amy Montenegro mixed in among the wins. She built her reputation in Invicta FC, the sport’s premier all-women promotion, where she eventually captured the Invicta FC Strawweight Championship and established herself as one of the division’s top emerging talents.
Invicta rise
The turning point came in December 2018, when Fortino outpointed UFC veteran Jamie Moyle by decision at Invicta FC 33 to signal she belonged among the elite. She then authored a remarkable single-night performance in May 2019 at Invicta’s Phoenix Series tournament, winning three bouts in one evening: an armbar of Manjit Kolekar, a decision over Juliana Lima, and a second-round rear-naked choke of Kailin Curran to win the tournament.
UFC tenure
That run carried Fortino to the UFC, and she made it count immediately. In July 2019 she upset the highly regarded Livinha Souza by decision in her Octagon debut, a signature win over a top-ranked grappler. Her next appearance proved tougher: in June 2020 she dropped a decision to the seasoned Tecia Pennington, a hard lesson against one of the division’s most experienced fighters.
Fighting style
Fortino is a pressure fighter who blends grappling with steadily improving striking. Her finish breakdown reflects a balanced toolkit: of her nine wins, three are by submission, two by knockout and four by decision, for a finish rate around 56%. The wrestling base from high school and the kickboxing she learned under Figueroa give her a relentless, in-your-face style that fits her nickname. Her three career losses all came by decision, suggesting she can be out-pointed over distance, but her durability, mat skills and forward pressure have repeatedly carried her against quality opposition.
