Building toward contention

Vettori’s arc ran chronologically through some of the division’s best. He outpointed Vitor Miranda in 2017, fought Omari Akhmedov to a majority draw, and then dropped a razor-close split decision to a then-undefeated Israel Adesanya in 2018 – a fight Vettori has long argued he won. He used that near-miss as fuel, stringing together decision wins over Cezar Ferreira and Andrew Sanchez, a first-round submission of Karl Roberson, and grinding five-round decisions over contenders Jack Hermansson and Kevin Holland that pushed him into title contention.

Title shot and the elite gatekeeper years

That run earned Vettori a rematch with Adesanya for the UFC middleweight championship at UFC 263 in June 2021. He came up short, losing a five-round unanimous decision in his lone title opportunity, but the effort kept him among the division’s top contenders. He rebounded with a dominant five-round decision over Paulo Costa later that year, then settled into a stretch as an elite measuring stick: a decision loss to former champion Robert Whittaker in 2022, a bounce-back win over Roman Dolidze at UFC 286, and a five-round defeat to Jared Cannonier in 2023. A tougher recent run saw him drop a rematch to Dolidze, a decision to Brendan Allen at UFC 318, and a 2025 decision to Brunno Ferreira.

Fighting style

Vettori is a high-volume pressure fighter who smothers opponents with forward movement, a heavy southpaw jab, and a strong grappling base – nine of his 19 wins have come by submission. His cardio and toughness are elite; in roughly 30 professional fights he has never been finished, with all 10 of his losses coming by decision. That iron chin and relentlessness make him a brutal night for anyone, though his measured, decision-heavy style has at times left him on the wrong side of close cards against the division’s very best.
