BIO

Early Life and Background

Jared Cannonier was born on March 16, 1984, in Dallas, Texas. Before entering MMA, he served in the U.S. Army and later worked as an air traffic controller. His path to professional fighting came relatively late in life compared to many athletes, but his athleticism, discipline, and toughness translated seamlessly into mixed martial arts.

Early MMA Career and Heavyweight Beginnings

Cannonier began his professional MMA career in 2011, fighting primarily in Alaska. Competing as a heavyweight, he built an impressive record with powerful striking and a reputation for finishing fights. His performances eventually earned him a UFC contract in 2014, marking the start of a unique career journey across multiple divisions.

UFC Career: From Heavyweight to Middleweight

Heavyweight (2015–2016): Cannonier debuted at heavyweight against Shawn Jordan, suffering a knockout loss. He rebounded with a highlight-reel KO over Cyril Asker, showcasing his striking potential.

Light Heavyweight (2016–2018): Moving down to light heavyweight, he faced top competition such as Jan Błachowicz, Glover Teixeira, and Dominick Reyes, but struggled to find consistency against elite opponents.

Middleweight (2018–Present): A dramatic transformation came when Cannonier cut down to 185 pounds, reinventing himself as a middleweight. The move revitalized his career, as he knocked out David Branch in his divisional debut, followed by TKO wins over Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson.

Contender Status and Title Run

Cannonier’s rise through the middleweight division established him as a dangerous contender known for his knockout power. In July 2022, he earned his first UFC title shot, challenging Israel Adesanya for the middleweight championship at UFC 276. Although he lost by unanimous decision, Cannonier proved his durability and ability to compete with the best.

He bounced back with strong wins over Sean Strickland and Marvin Vettori, keeping himself firmly in the top tier of middleweight contenders.

Fighting Style and Attributes

Striking Power – One of the hardest hitters at middleweight, with knockouts across three UFC divisions.

Durability – Extremely tough, able to absorb punishment and keep pressing forward.

Composed Pressure – Applies steady forward movement, waiting for the perfect moment to unleash his power.

Versatility Across Divisions – One of the rare fighters to compete in three UFC weight classes.

The Road Ahead

At nearly 40 years old, Cannonier remains one of the most dangerous middleweights in the world. His ability to maintain elite conditioning, paired with devastating knockout power, makes him a threat to anyone in the top five. With continued strong performances, another shot at UFC gold is within reach.

Career Highlights

Has competed in three divisions: Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, and Middleweight.

Notable Wins: Anderson Silva, Jack Hermansson, Kelvin Gastelum, Sean Strickland, Marvin Vettori.

Title Shot: Challenged Israel Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 276.

Jared “The Killa Gorilla” Cannonier has carved out one of the most unique careers in UFC history, evolving from heavyweight to middleweight while carrying knockout power at every step. His late start in MMA didn’t stop him from rising to title contention, and he continues to be one of the most feared strikers in the division. As he pushes for another run at the belt, Cannonier’s mix of experience, power, and determination ensures he remains a top threat at middleweight.
