Building a UFC career

McGee carried his momentum into the UFC proper, opening with an arm-triangle submission of Ryan Jensen at UFC 121 in 2010. After a rematch loss to Nick Ring in 2012, he settled in at welterweight and put together a notable 2013 stretch, decisioning veteran Josh Neer and then earning a split-decision win over future middleweight champion Robert Whittaker — a result that aged into one of the strongest on his resume. McGee remained a tough out for years, mixing wins over Alex Garcia, Claudio Silva and Ramiz Brahimaj with hard-fought losses to contenders like Santiago Ponzinibbio, Sean Strickland, Sean Brady and former interim champ Carlos Condit.

Veteran resurgence

Deep into his career, McGee continued to find ways to win. In October 2024 he reminded the division of his grappling teeth, submitting fellow veteran Tim Means via neck crank in the first round at UFC 307. The win came amid a tougher late-career run that included knockout losses to Jeremiah Wells and Matt Brown and a decision defeat to Michael Chiesa in 2025, but McGee's longevity inside one of the UFC's deepest divisions stands on its own.

Fighting style

McGee is the prototypical pressure fighter: a grinder who wears opponents down with volume, clinch work, takedowns and a deep gas tank. His record reflects that identity — of his 22 wins, 11 have come by decision, with six submissions and five knockouts, while the bulk of his losses have also gone to the scorecards. The submission game has stayed dangerous throughout his career, as the late finishes of Tim Means and others show, but his power has never been his calling card; opponents who can out-strike him at distance have given him his toughest nights.
