Lerma's first recorded bout came on October 13, 2004, at K-1 MAX: Champions Challenge 2004, where he faced the showman Genki Sudo. The fight was stopped in the second round by cut, going down as a loss for Lerma against one of the most creative fighters of his generation. A year later he returned for an even sterner test: on October 12, 2005, at K-1 MAX: Champions Challenge 2005, he met judoka Yoshihiro Akiyama, who closed the show with punches in the opening round.
