Philipe Lins bio
Personal background
Philipe Lins, nicknamed “Monstro,” is a Brazilian light heavyweight whose 18–6 professional record reflects one of the more rugged journeys in the division. Born on August 17, 1985, in Natal, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, he came to the sport through grappling, earning a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt after taking up the discipline as a teenager. He cut his teeth fighting almost exclusively in Brazil for the first stretch of his career before relocating to the United States, where he settled in South Florida and joined the powerhouse American Top Team in Coconut Creek. Standing 6'1" with a 78-inch reach, the heavy-handed Lins built a reputation as a finisher who could end fights with either his hands or his grappling.
Path to the elite
Lins turned professional in the mid-2000s and remained undefeated through his early Brazilian campaign before testing himself on bigger stages with Bitetti Combat and Bellator. His first real signature moment came on the regional and Bellator circuit, but his career took its sharpest upward turn after he signed with the Professional Fighters League. A 2017 first-round knockout loss to Vadim Nemkov at Bellator 182 was a hard lesson against a future champion, but it set the stage for the best run of his career.
PFL champion and UFC run
In the PFL's inaugural 2018 season, Lins put together a championship campaign at heavyweight. He opened the tournament with a second-round TKO of Alex Nicholson, then powered through the playoffs with a second-round TKO of Jared Rosholt on the same night, before capping the season with a fourth-round TKO of Josh Copeland in the final to claim the inaugural PFL heavyweight title and its $1 million prize. The win earned him a UFC contract, though the move to the Octagon brought early adversity: he dropped a 2020 decision to former champion Andrei Arlovski and was knocked out by Tanner Boser in the first round soon after. Dropping to light heavyweight revived him. He decisioned Marcin Prachnio in 2022, then opened 2023 with a first-round knockout of veteran Ovince St. Preux and a decision over Maxim Grishin. He extended the streak with a unanimous-decision win over Ion Cutelaba at UFC 299 in March 2024. In 2026, he stepped in against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou and was stopped by an overhand left in the opening round.
Fighting style
Lins is a finisher, with a roughly 72% finish rate built on a balanced offense: nine of his wins have come by knockout and four by submission, with only five going to the scorecards. His BJJ black belt gives him a real closing threat on the mat, while his power and pressure on the feet make him dangerous in any exchange. The flip side is durability against the division's heaviest hitters – five of his six losses have come by knockout or TKO, a pattern that shows up across the toughest names he has faced. At his best, he is a relentless, well-rounded mauler who forces opponents to survive in multiple phases.
Career highlights
- 2018 PFL heavyweight champion — ran the table in the league's inaugural season, finishing Josh Copeland in the final to win the title and a $1 million prize.
- UFC light heavyweight resurgence — stacked wins over Prachnio, St. Preux, Grishin and Cutelaba after dropping from heavyweight, the knockout of St. Preux among the standouts.
- Proven finisher — a 72% finish rate with 13 of his 18 wins ending inside the distance, threatening with both knockout power and a black-belt submission game.
