Personal background
Rongzhu is a Chinese lightweight competing in the UFC with a professional record of 27-6 and a reputation as one of the division's most aggressive young finishers. Born on March 7, 2000, in the Ngawa (Aba) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan, China, he came to the sport through the Enbo Fight Club, the well-known Sichuan gym that has developed a generation of Chinese fighters. Introduced to the gym by his uncle, Rongzhu started as an assistant and sparring partner before becoming a professional in his own right. A tall, rangy 5'11" with a 72-inch reach for the weight class, he has since broadened his camp to include training stints with American Top Team and City Kickboxing.
Path to the UFC
Rongzhu turned professional in 2016 at just 16 years old and built his record largely under China's WLF banner, where he became a lightweight champion and defended the title before reaching the UFC. Along the way he beat seasoned regional names, including a 2019 fifth-round rear-naked choke of Marcio Andrade and, most notably, a first-round TKO of veteran Shayilan Nuerdanbieke in September 2020 that helped put him on the international radar. First UFC run
Rongzhu's Octagon debut in April 2021 brought a unanimous-decision loss to Rodrigo Vargas at UFC 261, a tough welcome to the top level. The promise dimmed in February 2022, however, when he was submitted by a third-round brabo choke against Ignacio Bahamondes, leaving him with an uneven early UFC record.
Road to UFC and return
Rather than fade, Rongzhu rebuilt himself on the regional scene and through the Road to UFC tournament, where he reasserted his standing. He edged Sang Uk Kim by unanimous decision in August 2023 and then submitted previously unbeaten Shin Haraguchi with a third-round rear-naked choke in February 2024 to earn a second UFC contract. His return was bumpy – a September 2024 doctor-stoppage TKO loss to Chris Padilla – but he steadied himself in 2025, grinding out unanimous decisions over unbeaten prospect Kody Steele at UFC 312 in February and over veteran Austin Hubbard that August, showing growing maturity to go with his power.
