Cong Wang bio
Personal background
Cong Wang, nicknamed "The Joker," is a Chinese women's flyweight in the UFC whose striking pedigree is among the most decorated in the division. Born May 15, 1992, in Dalian, Liaoning, China, and competing out of Shanghai, Wang built her foundation in sanda before transitioning to mixed martial arts. Her amateur striking credentials are elite: gold in women's sanda at the 2013 World Wushu Championships and another gold at the 2014 Asian Games, along with a long professional kickboxing career. A compact 5'7" fighter, she entered MMA as a feared striker still chasing the highest levels of the sport.
From kickboxing star to MMA
Wang's combat-sports career began in the ring, and her most famous early result came in October 2015, when she defeated future UFC champion Valentina Shevchenko by unanimous decision in a kickboxing bout at Kunlun Fight 33 – a win that remains one of the few blemishes on Shevchenko's striking record and a result Wang has long pointed to in pursuit of an MMA rematch. She continued a successful kickboxing run before fully committing to mixed martial arts, where her sanda base translated into sharp, powerful striking. The transition was a calculated one: rather than chase early MMA bouts, she leaned on her championship-level striking foundation and built her ground game before stepping onto the international stage, arriving in the UFC as a polished, experienced competitor rather than a raw prospect.
UFC run
Wang sharpened her MMA game on the regional and Road to UFC pipeline before reaching the Octagon. In January 2024 she out-pointed Yanan Wu by unanimous decision, then made an unforgettable UFC debut in August 2024, knocking out Victoria Leonardo with first-round punches in a stoppage that earned a performance bonus. Her momentum stalled in November 2024 when Gabriella Fernandes caught her with a second-round technical submission via rear-naked choke, exposing her ground vulnerabilities. Wang answered with three straight decision wins: over Bruna Brasil at UFC 312 in February 2025, Ariane Lipski da Silva at UFC 316 in June 2025, and Eduarda Moura in February 2026. She is next scheduled to face Tracy Cortez at UFC 329.

Fighting style
Wang is a striker first, and her MMA record reflects it: with 2 KOs, 2 submissions and 5 decisions among her wins (a finish rate near 44%), she more often out-points opponents than blasts through them, leaning on the world-class sanda timing and power that produced her highlight-reel debut knockout. Her hands and kicks are her clearest weapons, and her championship-level striking pedigree separates her from much of the division. The demonstrated weakness is grappling defense – her lone MMA loss came by submission – making her ability to keep fights standing the key to her continued climb.
Career highlights
- Kickboxing win over Valentina Shevchenko — defeated the future UFC champion by decision in 2015, a result that still fuels her pursuit of an MMA rematch.
- Knockout UFC debut — stopped Victoria Leonardo with first-round punches for a bonus-winning Octagon arrival.
- Decorated striking pedigree — a multiple-time sanda gold medalist, including at the 2014 Asian Games, before her move to MMA.
