Rise at middleweight

Persistent weight-cutting struggles at welterweight pushed Gastelum toward middleweight, and the move unlocked some of his best work. After a TKO of Nate Marquardt and a split-decision loss to Neil Magny, he beat former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 200 and stopped Tim Kennedy in 2016. A 2017 bout with Vitor Belfort was overturned to a no-contest, and a submission loss to Chris Weidman followed, but he rebounded emphatically by knocking out reigning middleweight champion Michael Bisping in the first round in late 2017. A split-decision win over Ronaldo Souza in 2018 pushed him to the brink of a title shot.

Interim title fight and the contender years

Gastelum got his championship opportunity at UFC 236 in April 2019, challenging Israel Adesanya for the interim UFC Middleweight Championship. The five-round war — later inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame — went to Adesanya by unanimous decision in one of the era's most celebrated fights. It opened a difficult stretch: Gastelum dropped a split decision to Darren Till, a submission loss to Jack Hermansson, and decisions to former champion Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier, with a win over Ian Heinisch mixed in.

Veteran stretch

Gastelum has remained a tough out late in his career. He outpointed Chris Curtis at UFC 287 in 2023, lost a submission to Sean Brady, then beat Daniel Rodriguez in 2024. After a 2025 decision loss to Joe Pyfer, he edged Dustin Stoltzfus before a 2026 submission loss to Vicente Luque. He carries a professional record of 20–11.

Fighting style

Gastelum is a compact, heavy-handed pressure fighter who pairs a strong wrestling base with crisp, powerful boxing — an unorthodox southpaw who closes distance and lets his hands go. His record reflects that balance: 6 wins by knockout and 5 by submission against 9 decisions, a finish rate around 55 percent, with the rear-naked choke and his left hand both proven weapons, as the Bisping knockout and Ellenberger submission showed. His relatively short frame for middleweight can be a disadvantage against rangier strikers, and his four submission losses point to a vulnerability on the mat against elite grapplers. At his best, though, his combination of wrestling, power and durability has made him a perennial threat to anyone in the division.
