Curtis Blaydes bio
Personal background
Curtis Lionell "Razor" Blaydes is an American heavyweight in the UFC, born February 18, 1991, in Naperville, Illinois, and raised in the Chicago area. A decorated amateur wrestler, he won an Illinois state title at De La Salle Institute behind an undefeated senior season, earned a scholarship to Northern Illinois University, then transferred to Harper College and captured the 2011 NJCAA national championship at heavyweight. That elite wrestling pedigree became the foundation of his MMA game. Standing 6'4" with an 80" reach and fighting out of the Elevation Fight Team in Denver under coaches such as Eliot Marshall and Cody Donovan, Blaydes moved to Colorado specifically to train at altitude and sharpen the conditioning that matters so much at heavyweight.
Path to the UFC
Blaydes turned professional in May 2014, debuting with a first-round doctor-stoppage win over Lorenzo Hood at XFO 51. He ran off a string of regional finishes, including a 2015 stoppage of the undefeated Allen Crowder, before earning his UFC call-up in 2016. His promotional debut delivered an early lesson: a 2016 doctor-stoppage loss to Francis NGannou at UFC Fight Night 86. Blaydes regrouped immediately, finishing Cody East with elbows later that year and stopping veteran Aleksei Oleinik in 2017.
Climbing the heavyweight ranks
The wins kept stacking up. In 2018 Blaydes outpointed Mark Hunt over three rounds and battered Alistair Overeem with elbows for a third-round TKO. A 2018 rematch with NGannou ended in a first-round knockout loss, but Blaydes again rebounded with grinding decision wins over Justin Willis and stoppages of Shamil Abdurakhimov and former champion Junior dos Santos. He capped a contender run with a five-round decision over Alexander Volkov in 2020.
Title contender years
A 2021 knockout loss to Derrick Lewis briefly stalled his momentum, but Blaydes answered with wins over Jairzinho Rozenstruik and a TKO of Chris Daukaus. In 2022 he beat Tom Aspinall when the Briton suffered a fight-ending knee injury in the first round. After a 2023 loss to Sergei Pavlovich, Blaydes scored one of his best wins, a 2024 second-round knockout of Jailton Almeida. The Aspinall rematch later that year ended in a first-round knockout loss. He bounced back with a 2025 split-decision win over Rizvan Kuniev before dropping a 2026 decision to the unbeaten Josh Hokit.
Fighting style
Blaydes is the most accomplished wrestler in heavyweight UFC history, building his attack around relentless takedown entries and suffocating ground-and-pound. With a record of 19-6 and a 68% finish rate, 13 of his wins have come by knockout or TKO, most of them off ferocious top control and elbows. His chain wrestling lets him dictate where fights happen and drown larger opponents under volume. The honest caveat is durability: each of his six losses has come by knockout or TKO, a recurring vulnerability against the division's biggest punchers that has repeatedly stood between him and a title shot.
