Kyle Reyes bio
Personal background
Kyle "Boom" Reyes was a Guamanian featherweight who built a 15–7 professional record and a reputation as one of the Pacific island's most accomplished mixed martial artists. Born on January 8, 1991, in Barrigada, Guam, Reyes made his pro debut in front of his home crowd in 2009 and grew into a submission specialist of the highest order, with 10 of his 15 wins coming by tapout. The 5'8" featherweight eventually relocated to Las Vegas to train at the famed Xtreme Couture gym, where he sharpened his game for a career that spanned multiple continents and promotions. Reyes died in August 2021 at the age of 30, days after surgery to repair a torn bicep, a loss mourned across the MMA community and especially on Guam, where he was a beloved figure.
From Guam to the world stage
Reyes cut his teeth on the Pacific Xtreme Combat (PXC) circuit, the leading promotion in Guam and the broader Pacific region, where he faced a steady stream of rising talent. One of the most notable names on his ledger came in October 2014 at PXC 45, when in just the eighth fight of his career he dropped a decision to a young Alexander Volkanovski – the same Volkanovski who would later become UFC featherweight champion and a pound-for-pound great. Earlier, in 2013, he had also lost a decision to future UFC fighter Rolando Dy at PXC 39. Those early tests against elite competition only sharpened his resolve.
The American run and the move to ACA
Reyes made his stateside breakthrough in 2015, defeating undefeated prospect Kamuela Kirk by decision at WFF 19 before becoming a fixture on the Tachi Palace Fights circuit in California. He hit a competitive stretch there, dropping a decision to veteran Chris Culley in 2015, then reeling off a run of submission finishes before a 2016 stoppage loss to Cody Gibson at Tachi PF 29. Reyes then took his career international, signing with the Russian-based promotion ACB (later ACA). After a 2018 decision loss to Nohelin Hernandez, he authored one of his finest performances in April 2019, submitting the experienced Walel Watson with a first-round D'Arce choke at Final Fight Championship 35. He closed his career with an ACA knockout win before a 2020 stoppage loss to Bibert Tumenov.
Fighting style
Reyes was a grappling-first featherweight whose calling card was his elite submission game, an 80% finish rate built largely on the strength of 10 submission wins. He hunted chokes from every angle – guillotines, D'Arce chokes, rear-naked chokes and even a neck crank – and his scrambling and back-taking made him a nightmare on the mat. He could also bang, with a pair of knockouts on his record, but his bread and butter was forcing taps. His losses came almost exclusively against the toughest opposition, with five of his seven defeats going to decision, underlining how rarely he was finished and how often he made elite opponents earn it.
Career highlights
- Shared the cage with Alexander Volkanovski — fought the future UFC featherweight champion to a decision at PXC 45 early in both men's careers.
- First-round D'Arce choke of Walel Watson — submitted the seasoned veteran at Final Fight Championship 35 in 2019, a showcase of his world-class grappling.
- Guam's globe-trotting standout — compiled a 15–7 record with 10 submissions across PXC, Tachi Palace Fights and the Russian ACA promotion.
