UFC arrival and a star-making debut

Vannata's UFC debut became an instant talking point. Stepping in on short notice against perennial contender Tony Ferguson at UFC Fight Night 91 in July 2016, the unheralded newcomer nearly pulled off a massive upset, rocking Ferguson badly before fading and losing by second-round D'Arce choke. He earned widespread praise in defeat — and then followed it with one of the year's best knockouts, flattening John Makdessi with a spinning wheel kick in the first round at UFC 206 in December 2016, a finish that defined his "Groovy" reputation.

The grind of the lightweight division

Vannata settled into the role of an exciting, dangerous gatekeeper. He dropped a decision to David Teymur in 2017 and a unanimous decision to Drakkar Klose in 2018, but his action-fighter tendencies produced memorable nights, including a majority draw with Matt Frevola at UFC 230 in 2018. He showed his finishing instinct again in February 2019, submitting Marcos Mariano with a first-round kimura at UFC 234.

Later UFC run

Vannata mixed results across the back half of his run. He out-pointed Yancy Medeiros in 2020 and earned a split-decision win over Mike Grundy at UFC 262 in 2021, but also absorbed losses to Marc Diakiese, Charles Jourdain and Daniel Zellhuber. His most recent bout, an April 2026 second-round TKO loss to Darrius Flowers, marked a difficult night in a career defined by competitiveness against quality opposition.

Vannata is one of the UFC's most unpredictable strikers — a fighter who throws spinning kicks, wheel kicks and creative combinations from unusual angles, all backed by a legitimate grappling base.
