Finishing his way up the ranks

As his career matured, Calatayud's finishing instinct became his signature. He stopped Dondre Gibbs with first-round punches at XFS in 2014 and knocked out Chase Caldwell in the first round at XFS the following year, showing the knockout power that accounts for seven of his wins. His grappling was just as decisive: in 2016 he submitted Enrique Espinoza – an opponent he had already beaten earlier in his career – with a first-round guillotine choke, the kind of repeat win that underlines his command over familiar foes.

Peak form in CCW

Calatayud's best stretch came under the California Cage Wars banner. In January 2018 he finished Jaime Flores by ground-and-pound at CCW 3, then submitted the experienced 13–5 Willie Martinez with an armbar at CCW 9 that November – one of the more notable scalps on his resume. He closed out his run in December 2019 with a brabo-choke submission of the 7–3 Erick Urbina Mendez at CCW 17, a fitting finish for a fighter who has made tapping opponents look routine. The late-career form demonstrated that, well into his thirties, Calatayud remained one of the region's most dangerous closers.

Fighting style

Calatayud is a finisher through and through, with a 94% finish rate and not a single one of his 16 wins reaching the judges – he ends fights, by knockout or submission, almost without exception. His 10th Planet jiu-jitsu base makes him a constant threat on the mat, where eight of his wins have come by submission via chokes and joint locks, while seven knockouts show his striking is no afterthought. The balance is unusually even, making him difficult to game-plan against. His two losses both came at the very start of his career, more than fifteen years ago; everything since has been a model of regional consistency.
