Path to the UFC and early run

Nelson turned to professional MMA in 2009 and signed with the UFC after a perfect start. He submitted DaMarques Johnson by first-round rear-naked choke on his promotional debut in 2012, then outpointed veteran Jorge Santiago in 2013. His grappling dominance carried into 2014 with a slick guillotine of unbeaten prospect Omari Akhmedov and a rear-naked choke of Zak Cummings, before a competitive five-round split-decision loss to Rick Story handed him his first MMA setback.

Climbing the welterweight ladder

Nelson rebounded in style, submitting the heavily hyped Brandon Thatch in the first round on the UFC 189 card in 2015. A clinical decision loss to grappling master Demian Maia later that year was a measuring-stick night, but he answered with rear-naked-choke and guillotine finishes of Albert Tumenov and Alan Jouban in 2016 and 2017. The one blemish to his usual script came against Santiago Ponzinibbio, who handed Nelson the only knockout loss of his career in 2017.

Later career

Nelson submitted Alex Oliveira in 2018, then dropped a pair of close decisions to elite contenders Leon Edwards and Gilbert Burns in 2019. Fighting sparingly thereafter, he decisioned Takashi Sato in 2022, produced a vintage first-round armbar of Bryan Barberena in 2023, and dropped a decision to Kevin Holland in 2025.

Fighting style

Nelson is a submission grappler of the highest order, and his record reflects it: 13 of his 19 wins are submissions, anchoring an 89 percent finish rate among his victories. He chains takedowns and back-takes into a relentless rear-naked-choke and armbar game, and his ADCC-honed control on the mat has rarely been matched at welterweight. His karate base gives him an unorthodox, range-managing striking style, though the clearest pattern in his losses is that they have almost all come on the scorecards against the division's elite — he has been submitted zero times in his professional MMA career, a testament to his defensive grappling.
