Hyder Amil bio
Personal background
Hyder Osman Amil, the UFC featherweight known as “The Hurricane,” was born on May 28, 1990, in Cebu City, Philippines, to a Turkish-Indian father and a Filipino mother. At age six, he, his mother and his sister moved to the United States to escape an abusive home, and Amil grew up bouncing around the Bay Area – Vallejo, Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco and Richmond. A Filipino-American who proudly represents the Philippines, he came to combat sports through the traditional martial art Bok-fu in early adolescence before adding wrestling in high school, a grappling base that underpins his pressure-heavy style. The 5'8" featherweight, who carries a 70-inch reach, fights out of El Niño Training Center and balanced his fight career with a construction-management degree.
Path to the UFC
Amil turned professional in 2017 and built his record on the California and regional circuit, debuting with a second-round TKO of Adam Cruz at Dragon House 27 before a stint under the Bellator banner. He sharpened his craft across the Legacy Fighting Alliance, where he stacked wins and earned his shot at the big show. His grinding climb finally paid off in 2023, when a strong LFA run set up his audition for the UFC.
LFA run and Contender Series
The fight that announced Amil as a prospect came in July 2022, when he headlined LFA 137 and stopped Chase Gibson by second-round TKO. That performance carried him to Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2023, where he outpointed the experienced Emrah Sonmez over three rounds by unanimous decision to lock down a UFC contract.
UFC tenure
Amil made an immediate impression in the Octagon. He debuted in February 2024 with a second-round TKO of Fernie Garcia, then went one better in July 2024, blitzing the previously highly touted Jeong Yeong Lee for a first-round knockout. He kept the streak alive in March 2025, edging the slick William Gomis by split decision. The unbeaten run finally ended in June 2025 at UFC 317, where Jose Delgado stopped him with knees and elbows in the first round, and he dropped a second straight bout in November 2025, losing a unanimous decision to veteran Jamall Emmers. He looks to right the ship in June 2026 against Christian Rodriguez.
Fighting style
Amil is a high-volume, pressure-based striker whose nickname fits his swarming style. His record reflects it: six of his 11 wins are by knockout, with one submission and four decisions, for a finish rate around 64%. A wrestling foundation lets him dictate range and grind in the clinch, while his cardio and forward output wear opponents down over three rounds. The two losses on his ledger – one by TKO, one by decision – came against sharp finishers and exposed the risk that comes with his come-forward approach, but his combination of pace, power and toughness keeps him dangerous in any featherweight scrap.
Career highlights
- Contender Series contract — beat Emrah Sonmez on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2023 to earn his UFC deal after years on the regional grind.
- Perfect UFC start — opened his Octagon run 3-0, including a first-round knockout of touted prospect Jeong Yeong Lee.
- Filipino trailblazer — a Cebu-born featherweight who reached the UFC representing the Philippines, blazing a trail at the sport’s top level.
