Rising through the lightweight division

Alvarez responded exactly as a finisher should. He stopped Danilo Belluardo by second-round TKO in June 2019, then submitted former contender Joe Duffy with a first-round guillotine in July 2020. On the marquee UFC 254 card headlined by Khabib vs. Gaethje, he tapped veteran Alexander Yakovlev with a first-round armbar, and in November 2021 he blasted Thiago Moisés in a single round with elbows and punches. A February 2022 TKO loss to surging contender Arman Tsarukyan slowed him, but it did nothing to dull his finishing instincts.

Surging back near the top

Alvarez returned in 2023 and went on a tear. He submitted Marc Diakiese with a second-round D'Arce choke, stopped Elves Brener with knees and punches in 2024, and produced one of his most spectacular finishes that December: a first-round flying-knee-and-punches knockout of Drakkar Klose. In October 2025 he showed his other gear, outpointing veteran Vicente Luque over three rounds for a unanimous decision. His 2026 step up against unbeaten standout Yaroslav Amosov at UFC 328 ended in a second-round arm-triangle submission, a reminder of the elite level he is now operating around.

Fighting style

Alvarez is one of the purest finishers in the UFC, with a staggering 96% finish rate and 17 of his wins coming by submission. His length is the engine: long limbs let him attack triangles, guillotines, armbars, and chokes from positions most fighters can't reach, and he chains attacks relentlessly until something gives. He is far from one-dimensional, though – five of his wins are knockouts, including the flying-knee finish of Klose, and he proved against Luque he can win on the scorecards. His honest weakness is the same as his strength's flip side: when a strong wrestler or pressure striker keeps him from grappling on his terms, as Ismagulov, Tsarukyan, and Amosov did, he can be neutralized.
