UFC wars and the road to gold

Gaethje announced himself at the UFC in 2017 with a war against Michael Johnson, then learned the cost of his all-action approach in back-to-back knockout-style losses to Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier. He answered with a stunning run of violence, knocking out James Vick, Edson Barboza and Donald Cerrone in the first round apiece. That surge peaked in May 2020 when he dominated and stopped Tony Ferguson to win the interim lightweight title, before running into the unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov, who submitted him by triangle choke at UFC 254.

Title near-misses and championship glory

Gaethje rebounded with a decision over Michael Chandler in a 2021 Fight of the Year contender, then fell short in a 2022 title bid, submitted by Charles Oliveira. He kept delivering classics – decisions over Rafael Fiziev and a brutal head-kick knockout of Dustin Poirier for the symbolic BMF title in 2023 – even as a last-second 2024 knockout loss to Max Holloway at UFC 300 became an instant classic. He kept winning, beating Fiziev again and outpointing Paddy Pimblett, and finally captured undisputed UFC lightweight gold in June 2026 by stopping Ilia Topuria via corner stoppage.

Fighting style

Gaethje is the rare elite wrestler who almost never wrestles, choosing instead to stand and trade in some of the most violent firefights the sport has seen. His calling cards are devastating low kicks that erode opponents' mobility and a thudding right hand, and his record tells the story: 21 of his 28 wins are by knockout, a finish rate near 79%. The trade-off is a chin willing to take fire to land its own, and his losses have come either to elite grapplers who dragged him to the mat or in shootouts where he was caught. Few fighters combine his pedigree, power and sheer entertainment value.
