Building a contender

Bautista responded to that setback by rebuilding methodically. He outpointed Jin Soo Son over three rounds in July 2019, then produced a highlight-reel finish of unbeaten prospect Miles Johns with a flying knee and punches at UFC 247 in February 2020. After a 2021 TKO loss to Trevin Jones, he reeled off the best run of his career: a decision over Jay Perrin, a first-round rear-naked choke of veteran Brian Kelleher in 2022, and a first-round armbar of Benito Lopez. He kept the streak alive with a 2023 submission of Guido Cannetti and a decision over Da'Mon Blackshear.

Into the rankings

Bautista announced himself as a ranked threat with a unanimous-decision win over Ricky Simón in January 2024, then earned a career-defining result with a split-decision victory over former featherweight king José Aldo at UFC 307 in October 2024. He added a decision over former Bellator champion Patchy Mix at UFC 316 in June 2025. A unanimous-decision loss to unbeaten Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 321 in October 2025 checked his climb, but he rebounded in February 2026 with a second-round rear-naked choke of Vinicius Oliveira, setting up a rematch with Cory Sandhagen.

Fighting style

Bautista is a well-rounded bantamweight whose strongest asset is his submission grappling — seven of his 17 wins have come by submission, the largest share of his finishes, supported by three knockouts and seven decisions for a 59 percent finish rate. His wrestling base lets him control exchanges and hunt the back, where his black-belt jiu-jitsu takes over, while his striking has grown sharper and more confident as he has faced elite opposition. He is durable and increasingly cerebral, comfortable banking rounds when finishes do not come.
