Neil Magny bio
Personal background
Neil Magny, the durable UFC welterweight nicknamed "The Haitian Sensation," was born on August 3, 1987, in Brooklyn, New York, and carries Haitian heritage that inspired his fighting moniker. He grew up in a modest household before his family relocated to the Chicago area, where he wrestled and played football at Thornwood High School. Magny's path was unusual: he spent years in the Illinois Army National Guard, rising to sergeant and deploying overseas, while picking up combatives experience along the way. He began training martial arts as a teenager, eventually settling into the welterweight division. Now fighting out of Elevation Fight Team in Denver, the rangy 6'3" Magny built his game around length, cardio and a relentless, high-volume pace.
Path to the UFC
Magny turned professional in 2010 and ran off early regional wins before earning his shot on The Ultimate Fighter Season 16 in 2012, where he beat Frank Camacho and Bristol Marunde before a knockout loss to Mike Ricci ended his run. He still earned a UFC contract, debuting with a decision over Jon Manley at UFC 157 in early 2013. After a rough patch that included a loss to Seth Baczynski, Magny found his footing and went on a tear.
Climbing the welterweight ranks
From 2014 onward, Magny stacked wins, beating Tim Means and knocking out Rodrigo de Lima, then edging Kelvin Gastelum by split decision in 2015. A 2015 submission loss to grappling ace Demian Maia exposed his ground vulnerabilities, but he bounced back by stopping former Bellator champion Hector Lombard in 2016 and outpointing former UFC champ Johny Hendricks to close out the year. In late 2017 he handed veteran Carlos Condit a decision loss, cementing his status as a gatekeeper to the division's elite.
Veteran resilience
Magny's later career has been a study in longevity. He scored a notable 2020 decision over former champion Robbie Lawler and bested Geoff Neal in 2021. Losses to rising contenders Shavkat Rakhmonov, Gilbert Burns and Ian Machado Garry showed the gap to the top tier, yet Magny kept producing, stopping Mike Malott in 2024 and submitting Jake Matthews in 2025 deep into his career.

Fighting style
Magny is a volume-based pressure fighter who leans on his length, footwork and conditioning to outwork opponents over three rounds. His 31-14 record carries a balanced finishing portfolio – nine knockouts and five submissions against 17 decision wins – reflecting a fighter who wins more often on points than with one shot. His size and pace make him a problem for almost anyone, but his record also reveals a recurring weakness: seven of his 14 losses have come by submission, a sign that elite grapplers can drag him into deep water.
Career highlights
- Win over Robbie Lawler — outpointed the former UFC welterweight champion in 2020, one of the biggest names on his lengthy resume.
- Beat two former UFC champions — decisioned Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit, validating his standing as a top welterweight gatekeeper.
- Long-tenured UFC mainstay — a former U.S. Army National Guard sergeant who has fought a deep schedule of contenders since 2013, blending durability with consistent output.
