Personal background
Sumudaerji, the UFC flyweight and bantamweight known as "The Tibetan Eagle," was born on January 20, 1996, in Aba (Ngawa), a Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture in China's Sichuan province. Of Tibetan heritage and also known by the name Sonam Dhargay, he spent part of his childhood herding cattle in the mountains before sport pulled him in another direction. At 14 he joined the renowned Enbo Fight Club in Chengdu, where he was molded into one of the most explosive Chinese strikers of his generation. Tall and rangy for the lower weight classes at 5'8" with a 72-inch reach, Sumudaerji has become one of the most recognizable Tibetan athletes in the UFC, carrying a 19-7 record built on a fearsome knockout game.
Path to the UFC
Sumudaerji turned professional in 2016 and quickly made his name on China's WLF (Wu Lin Feng) circuit, where his highlight-reel finishes — flying knees, spinning back kicks and body-shot knockouts — turned heads. Facing the prospect of being released, Sumudaerji reinvented himself as a more disciplined, decision-savvy fighter. He edged Mitch Raposo by split decision at UFC 314 in April 2025, then took unanimous nods over Kevin Borjas in August 2025 and Jesus Aguilar at UFC 326 in March 2026, stacking three straight wins.
