Sumudaerji bio
Personal background
Sumudaerji, the UFC flyweight and bantamweight known as "The Tibetan Eagle," was born on January 20, 1996, in Aba (Ngawa), a Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture in China's Sichuan province. Of Tibetan heritage and also known by the name Sonam Dhargay, he spent part of his childhood herding cattle in the mountains before sport pulled him in another direction. At 14 he joined the renowned Enbo Fight Club in Chengdu, where he was molded into one of the most explosive Chinese strikers of his generation. Tall and rangy for the lower weight classes at 5'8" with a 72-inch reach, Sumudaerji has become one of the most recognizable Tibetan athletes in the UFC, carrying a 19-7 record built on a fearsome knockout game.
Path to the UFC
Sumudaerji turned professional in 2016 and quickly made his name on China's WLF (Wu Lin Feng) circuit, where his highlight-reel finishes — flying knees, spinning back kicks and body-shot knockouts — turned heads. Thirteen of his 19 career wins have come by knockout, a finishing ratio that earned him a UFC contract and a debut in November 2018 against the experienced Louis Smolka. That introduction to the elite level was a harsh one: Smolka submitted him with a second-round armbar, an early sign that grappling would be the puzzle Sumudaerji needed to solve.
Finding his footing in the Octagon
He answered with the best stretch of his UFC tenure. In August 2019 he outpointed Andre Soukhamthath over three rounds for his first promotional win, then delivered the kind of finish his reputation promised, blasting Malcolm Gordon with first-round punches in November 2020. He followed that with a unanimous-decision win over Zarrukh Adashev in January 2021, briefly positioning himself as a flyweight on the rise.
Setbacks and a resurgence
The middle of his run exposed his recurring vulnerability. He was submitted by Matt Schnell via triangle choke in July 2022, then tapped to an arm-triangle from veteran Tim Elliott in the first round in December 2023, and dropped a decision to Charles Johnson in October 2024. Facing the prospect of being released, Sumudaerji reinvented himself as a more disciplined, decision-savvy fighter. He edged Mitch Raposo by split decision at UFC 314 in April 2025, then took unanimous nods over Kevin Borjas in August 2025 and Jesus Aguilar at UFC 326 in March 2026, stacking three straight wins. A May 2026 bout with Alex Perez was ruled a no contest after an accidental groin kick.
Fighting style
Sumudaerji is a dynamic, kick-heavy striker whose finishing instincts have always been his defining trait — 13 of his 19 wins are knockouts, and his early-career reel is loaded with spectacular flying knees and spinning kicks. His length lets him fight at range and pour on volume, and at his best he overwhelms opponents in a single round. The honest counterweight is on the mat: six of his seven losses have come by submission, a clear pattern that wrestlers and grapplers have repeatedly targeted. His recent run of decision wins suggests a fighter who has tightened his defense and learned to grind out rounds rather than relying solely on the finish.
Career highlights
- First-round KO of Malcolm Gordon — flattened Malcolm Gordon with punches in 2020, the signature finish of his UFC run.
- Three-fight win streak — reversed a rough stretch with consecutive decisions over Raposo, Borjas and Jesus Aguilar across 2025–2026.
- 74% finish rate — 14 of 19 wins by stoppage, headlined by 13 knockouts, making him one of China's most dangerous finishers.
