Jai Herbert bio
Personal background
Jai Herbert is a British lightweight contender in the UFC, fighting under the fitting nickname "The Black Country Banger." Born on May 13, 1988, in Wolverhampton in England's West Midlands, Herbert came to mixed martial arts later than most, walking into a local gym near his Low Hill home after a turbulent youth that included leaving school early and surviving a stabbing as a teenager. He spent years working as a scaffolder before committing fully to fighting. Built on a long, rangy 6'1" frame with a 77-inch reach, Herbert built his game on a striking-first foundation rooted in kickboxing, sharpening his grappling at Renegade Jiu Jitsu in Birmingham. He carries a professional record of 14-6-1 with a striking-heavy finishing résumé.
Path to the UFC
Herbert turned professional in 2015 and quickly stacked early knockouts on the British regional scene through promotions like Full Contact Contender and BAMMA. His rise hit an early bump in December 2016, when he was stopped by punches in the first round by Rhys McKee at BAMMA 27 – a setback that proved instructive rather than derailing. He rebounded across BAMMA and Cage Warriors, where he became lightweight champion, capping the run with a first-round knee knockout of Cain Carrizosa at Cage Warriors 109 in October 2019 that earned him a UFC contract.
UFC career
The step up was unforgiving. Herbert dropped his July 2020 promotional debut to veteran Francisco Trinaldo by third-round TKO, then was submitted by Renato Moicano via rear-naked choke in June 2021. He answered with the kind of finish that made his name, blasting Khama Worthy in the first round in October 2021. In March 2022 he ran into rising star Ilia Topuria, who knocked him out in the second round, but Herbert steadied himself months later with a unanimous-decision win over Kyle Nelson.
The middle of his UFC run became a grind. He fought to a majority draw with Ľudovít Klein at UFC 286 in March 2023, then lost a unanimous decision to Fares Ziam that July. Herbert reset with a unanimous-decision victory over Rolando Bedoya in August 2024 before dropping a close split decision to Chris Padilla in March 2025. He returned to the win column in emphatic fashion in April 2026, stopping Mandel Nallo with first-round punches.
Fighting style
Herbert is a knockout artist first and foremost. Of his 14 wins, 10 have come by knockout or TKO against just one submission and three decisions, giving him a finish rate near 79 percent. He fights long, using his reach and kickboxing pedigree to manage distance and uncork heavy hands and kicks, including a body-kick knockout early in his career. His vulnerabilities have been exposed against the division's sharpest finishers and grapplers – he has been knocked out three times and submitted once – but when he can dictate range on the feet, few lightweights hit harder.
Career highlights
- Cage Warriors lightweight champion — captured a major European title and earned his UFC contract with a highlight-reel first-round knee knockout of Cain Carrizosa.
- First-round finisher — 10 of his 14 wins have come by knockout, including explosive UFC stoppages of Khama Worthy and Mandel Nallo.
- Resilient veteran — repeatedly rebounded from losses to elite opposition, including future star Ilia Topuria, to stay relevant in a brutally deep lightweight division.
