Jai Herbert is a British lightweight contender in the UFC, fighting under the fitting nickname "The Black Country Banger." Born on May 13, 1988, in Wolverhampton in England's West Midlands, Herbert came to mixed martial arts later than most, walking into a local gym near his Low Hill home after a turbulent youth that included leaving school early and surviving a stabbing as a teenager. He spent years working as a scaffolder before committing fully to fighting. Path to the UFC
Herbert turned professional in 2015 and quickly stacked early knockouts on the British regional scene through promotions like Full Contact Contender and BAMMA. His rise hit an early bump in December 2016, when he was stopped by punches in the first round by Rhys McKee at BAMMA 27 – a setback that proved instructive rather than derailing. He rebounded across BAMMA and Cage Warriors, where he became lightweight champion, capping the run with a first-round knee knockout of Cain Carrizosa at Cage Warriors 109 in October 2019 that earned him a UFC contract.
UFC career

Herbert reset with a unanimous-decision victory over Rolando Bedoya in August 2024 before dropping a close split decision to Chris Padilla in March 2025.
