UFC career

Nelson's Octagon debut was a baptism by fire: a December 2018 TKO loss to Diego Ferreira at UFC 231, followed by a 2019 submission defeat to Matt Sayles. He flashed his power later that year with a first-round TKO of Polo Reyes, but the next stretch tested his resolve, with a 2020 knockout loss to Billy Quarantillo and a 2022 decision defeat to Jai Herbert. The turning point came in February 2023, when he fought to a majority draw with former title challenger Doo Ho Choi — a result that seemed to settle him.

The resurgence

From that draw, Nelson reeled off the best run of his UFC tenure. He outpointed undefeated prospect Blake Bilder at UFC 289 in June 2023, then took a unanimous decision over Fernando Padilla. He capped the streak with a vintage first-round TKO of veteran Bill Algeo in March 2024. The momentum stalled with a first-round TKO loss to Steve Garcia, but Nelson bounced back in October 2025 with a unanimous-decision win over Matt Frevola. He was stopped early in his most recent outing, a March 2026 head-kick-and-punches TKO loss to Terrance McKinney.

Fighting style

Nelson is a pressure-forward striker with knockout power and a deep, finish-oriented skill set: of his 17 wins, six have come by knockout and four by submission, balanced by seven decisions that speak to his durability and conditioning over three rounds. The black belt grappling gives him a real submission threat and the wrestling base to survive scrambles, but his back-and-forth, all-action style has also left him vulnerable — four of his seven losses have come by knockout or TKO. He is a tough, willing fighter whose fan-friendly approach cuts both ways, and his career-best form arrived once he learned to channel that aggression more selectively.
